Q & A with Career Services

"Am I too old for an internship?"
You're never too old and it's never too late for an internship. Many recent and even not-so-recent college graduates secure internships to assist them in job search or researching career change. Some organizations may not use the term internship, but rather volunteer or management trainee. Whatever the term, the results are the same:  additional experience in the field of your interest. Many companies use their internship program as an opportunity to train and screen potential new hires, so it is prudent to focus on doing extremely well during your internship. Just before the internship ends, speak with your supervisor about the possibility of full-time employment. Even if there isn't an opening, continue to keep in touch with your contact in the company for future opportunities and to serve as a reference.

Given the challenging job market, internships are a vital way to showcase your talent to an organization in a risk-free manner. Even if you don't continue to work at the same company, an internship provides the opportunity to network with professional contacts in your area of interest. These contacts provide valuable employment connections that will assist you in attaining the career and vocational satisfaction you desire.

We welcome Whitworth alumni to contact Career Services at www.whitworth.edu/careerservices or 509.777.3272 if we can assist in this process.
