Baseball Pitcher - Eric Anderson Anderson earned a victory over Pacific Lutheran in his first career start in a Northwest Conference contest. He struck out seven and didn’t walk a batter in 7+ innings.
Women's Golf - Emily Guthrie Guthrie earned her third medalist finish of 2010-11 at the Whitman Invitational, finishing two shots ahead of the second-place finisher.
Men's Tennis - Colin Zalewski Zalewski helped Whitworth finish out its best regular season in tennis in more than 20 years with victories in both of his singles matches and both of his doubles matches.
Women's Field - Erica Cox Cox finished third in the hammer (170’-8”) behind throwers from Idaho and WSU. She came within an inch of her own school record. She also finished seventh in the discus with a distance of 128’-4”.
Men's Field - Carter Comito Comito improved his NCAA automatic qualifying mark in the discus, winning the event with his throw of 184’-3”. He was a foot short of Fred Shaffer’s school record, set in 1961. At the time, Shaffer’s mark was the US National Record. Comito also finished fifth in the shot put during the meat, featuring mostly NCAA DI athletes.
Women's Track - Tonya Turner Turner set her second school record in as many weeks, breaking the Whitworth mark in the 1500 meter run with a conference-leading 4:36.59, which is also an NCAA provisional mark. She finished third behind two Idaho runners. She also finished fourth in the 800 with a season-best 2:18.90.
April 5
Women's Tennis - Rachel Burns Burns won both of her singles matches against two of the top singles players in the NWC (Goya of Pacific and Roberg of Whitman). She helped Whitworth near the 2011 NWC regular season title and extend its winning streak to 14 in a row.
Men's Field - Carter Comito Carter finished second in the shot put at the Whitworth Sam Adams Classic to a thrower from Idaho. More important, his mark of 52’-1.75” now leads the NWC and is an improvement over his previous NCAA qualifying mark.
March 22
Baseball Player - Tyler Pfeffer Pfeffer batted .444 in four games, leading the Pirates in RBIs (8) and runs scored (5). He had two of Whitworth’s three RBIs at NAIA power LCSC. He also had at least one hit in all four games, and either scored or drove in a run in all four games.
Women's Track - Elizabeth Mattila Mattila won the 400 hurdles with a strong NCAA Division III provisional qualifying time. Her time of 1:03.81 is the best in the NWC this season by a wide margin.
Men's Field - Alex Hymel Hymel broke a 21-year old Whitworth record and posted an NCAA DIII automatic qualifying mark with his javelin throw on Saturday. He broke the previous Whitworth record of 211-11 by nearly five feet. His throw leads the NWC this season.
March 15
Tennis Women - Rachel Burns Burns defeated Linfield’s Abby Olbrich in impressive fashion to help the Pirates team claim the battle of unbeaten teams on Friday. She also won in straight sets against PLU’s Leah Newell on Saturday. She teamed with Alli Marshall to split the No. 1 doubles matches.
March 8
Field Men - Carter Comito Comito hit an NCAA A (automatic) qualifying mark in his first outdoor meet of 2011 in the discus with a throw of 176’-4.”
Field Women - Erica Cox Cox broke a 21-year-old school record in the discus with a toss of 149’-0” at the Willamette Opener.
February 8
Swimming Men - Aaron Vaccaro Vaccaro broke his own school record in the 100 butterfly by .8 of a second with a time of 50.24. He also posted a season-best in the 50 free in 21.33 and swam the butterfly on the winning 200 medley relay team..
Swimming Women - Melissa Barringer Barringer won both breaststroke events in season-best times, in 1:08.20 in the 100 and 2:32.23 in the 200. Her 100 time is second-best in the NWC this season. She also swam the breaststroke leg on the winning medley relay.
February 1
Basketball Men - David Riley Riley averaged 20.0 points and 4.5 rebounds in two victories. He was the game’s high-scorer im both contests. He made 15-22 shots from the field (68.2%) and 7-11 from three-point range (63.6%).
January 25
Basketball Men - Michael Taylor Taylor
led Whitworth in scoring average (20.0 ppg) and assists (5.5 apg) in two home victories that improved the Pirates to 17-0. He made 67% of his field goals and 100% of his three-pointers and free throws.
Swimming Women - Jennifer Benson Benson was the only Pirate woman to win four individual events as the Pirates swept Puget Sound and PLU. She was also the anchor leg on two winning relays. Whitworth’s women extended their NWC dual meet winning streak to 34 in a row.
Swimming Men - Kalen Darling Darling led Whitworth road dual meet victories at Puget Sound and Pacific Lutheran by winning all four of his individual events. He also led off the winning medley relay at UPS. Whitworth’s men have won 77 NWC dual meets in a row.
January 18
Swimming Men - Rory Buck Buck won all of his individual and relay events in meets against Willamette and Linfield. He won the 100 breaststroke in 56.71, breaking his own Whitworth Aquatic Center record, and helped the Pirates win the 200 medley relay in 1:36.33 and the 200 freestyle relay in 1:26.56. Versus Linfield he took first in the 200 breaststroke in 2:07.68 and was part of the winning 400 medley relay in 3:32.75 and 400 free relay in 3:15.76.
January 4
Basketball Men - Michael Taylor Taylor was named to the D3hoops.com Classic All-Tournament team after averaging 20.5 points, 10.0 rebounds and 3.5 assists in two victories. He helped #6 Whitworth run its winning streak to 11 to open the season.
December 7
Swimming Women - Abby Pavelko Pavelko won the 1,650 freestyle with an NCAA provisional qualifying time. She was the only NWC woman to win an individual event at the Husky Invite.
Swimming Men - Rory Buck Buck won both breaststroke events at the Husky Invitational, earning automatic NCAA qualifying marks in both events. Both of his times lead the nation at the NCAA DIII level. He was also part of five relays that finished in second place, behind only NCAA DII Grand Canyon.
November 30
Basketball Women - Kayla Johnson Johnson led Whitworth, the only unranked team at the Lady ‘Yote Classic, to the tournament title by averaging 21.5 points and 5.0 rebounds. She made 64% of her shots from the floor and 93% of her free throws. The Bucs defeated NAIA DII #19 Col. of Idaho and NAIA DI #10 Westminster (UT).
Basketball Men - Michael Taylor Taylor averaged 19.0 points per game and rebounded 5.0 rebounds per game in three Pirate victories. He made 60% of his shots from the field and 85% of his free throws, Whitworth defeated Carthage (#5 in D3hoops.com preseason poll) and Luther to win the Surf’s Up Classic in Hawaii.
November 16
Swimming Women - Abby Pavelko Pavelko led Whitworth to a pair of dual meet victories. She was the only Pirate woman to win all four of her individual events over the weekend, taking first place in the 400 I.M. and 500 freestyle at Pacific, and the 1,650 free and 200 I.M. at L&C.
Swimming Men - Aaron Vaccaro Vaccaro won all four of his individual events over the weekend. His time in the 50 free is within a half second of Whitworth’s school record and his 100 fly time is less than a second off the Pirate school record. He also swam the butterfly leg on both winning medley relays against Pacific and Lewis & Clark.
Football - Adam Anderson Anderson ran for six touchdowns against UPS to tie his own single game school record and passed for another score to account for a total of seven touchdowns in a single game. He averaged 11.2 yards per carry. On his 18th carry of the game he surpassed Whitworth’s career rushing yardage record and ends his Pirate career with 3,338 yards. He also extended his school touchdowns scored record to 55.
November 9
Soccer Offensive Women - Allie Smith Smith scored the final two goals after L&C had pulled to within 2-1 late in the second half of Whitworth's 4-1 season-ending victory.
Volleyball - Kaimi Rocha Rocha led Whitworth to a pair of road sweeps at Willamette and L&C, giving the Pirates an NWC title. She averaged 5.5 kills and 3.5 digs per set in the two victories.
November 2
Soccer Defensive Men - Dion Coxe Coxe played strong defense as the center-back, leading to a pair of shutouts. He was the anchor vs. Linfield as Whitworth played the final 67 minutes a man down, leading to the win.
Soccer Offensive Women - Sarah Berentson Berentson scored a pair of match-winning goals to lead Whitworth to a pair of NWC victories against Willamette and Linfield. She totaled three goals and an assist during the weekend.
October 26
Soccer Defensive Men - Kyle Novak Novak posted his fifth and sixth shutouts of the season against George Fox (3-0) and Pacific (0-0) and lowered his goals-against average to 0.47 in nine matches.
October 12
Football Special Teams - Zack Clow Clow averaged 36 yards on four punts. More importantly, all four of his punts were stopped inside the PLU 20-yard line, including three inside the 15.
October 5
Soccer Offensive Women - Callie Bergstrom Bergstrom was strong in goal all weekend in overtime road wins against Linfield (1-0) and Willamette (2-1).
Cross Country Women - Tonya Turner Turner finished 12th and was the top NCAA DIII runner (the next closest was her own teammate in 15th) at the Willamette Charles Bowles Invite, placing 12th out of 257 runners with a time of 17:52.90. She led the Pirate women to the best NCAA DIII finish.
Volleyball - Kaimi Rocha Rocha led Whitworth to a pair of NWC road wins over the weekend. She set a career high with 27 kills versus Pacific and helped lead Whitworth back from a 2-0 sets deficit at Linfield. She averaged 4.7 kills and 3.6 digs per set.
September 28
Soccer Offensive Women - Sarah Berentson Berentson led the Pirates to their second win over Puget Sound in as many seasons, assisting the first goal and scoring the next two in a 4-0 win over the Loggers. She also helped start Whitworth’s comeback from an early 1-0 deficit to PLU, assisting on the first goal in the 4-1 victory.
September 21
Cross Country Men - Trevor Berrian Trevor was the top NCAA DIII finisher at the UW Sundodger Open race, leading Whitworth to a team title over NAIA/CIS power UBC. He finished third, less than 13 seconds behind the winner from NCAA DII St. Martin’s.
September 14
Soccer Defensive Women - Callie Bergstrom Bergstrom earned a pair of victories in goal last weekend and made four second-half saves against UCSC to preserve her first shutout of the season.
September 7
Cross Country Men - Trevor Berrian Trevor came from behind to overtake teammate Kalen Darling over the final kilometer and lead Whitworth to a 1-2-3-4 finish and team victory at the Whitman Invitational.
Cross Country Women - Tonya Turner Turner led Whitworth to a 1-2-3-4 finish and team title at the Whitman Invitational, winning the individual race for the second straight year.
