Baseball - Landon Scott led the Pirates to a series sweep by hitting .643 for the weekend. He increased his NWC-leading batting average to .468.
April 13
Track Men - Dusty Caseria Caseria defeated a deep field of 43 runners to win the 800 at the Washington-Oregon Dual in 1:53.24. His time just missed an NCAA provisional qualifying mark and is the second-fastest in the NWC only to the nation-leading time of teammate Emmanuel Bofa.
Field Men - Alex Hymel Hymel won the javelin at the Washington-Oregon Dual, which included 24 competitors, with an NCAA automatic qualifying mark and the best mark this season in the NWC of 206’-5".
Baseball - Landon Scott Scott batted .643 and posted a gigantic slugging average of 1.357 over the weekend, doing his best to help the Pirates against league-leading Pacific Lutheran. He led the team in hits (9), RBIs (8) and runs scored (5).
April 6
Track Women - Tonya Turner Turner finished second out of six athletes in the 1500 (4:48.89) at the Sam Adams Classic in a race that included student-athletes from WSU and LCSC. Her time is the best in the NWC this season.
Field Women - Erica Cox Cox finished 3rd of 14 in the discus (125-9) and 4th of 11 in the hammer (155-9) at the Sam Adams Classic. Her mark in the discus is the best in the NWC this season.
March 30
Tennis Women - Rachel Burns Burns led the Pirates to a 4-1 record this week, including three wins over regionally-ranked teams - all on the road. She won her singles matches and doubles matches in all three. Rachel (and the team) only lost to Chapman (#10 in the nation) and the top-ranked singles player in the region.
Softball Player - Heather Hesselgesser Hesselgesser led Whitworth to a 7-1 week by hitting .571 and leading the team in RBIs (14) and total bases. She had three doubles and two homeruns while adding four stolen bases to her totals.
Softball Pitcher - Jessica Mangis Mangis posted a 0.78 earned run average in four appearances this week and had two complete-game shutouts. She earned her second save of the season and also won once in relief. She did all of this while battling a persistent finger injury that is limiting her playing time.
March 23
Field Men - Ron Whitley Whitley earned NCAA provisional qualifying marks in both the hammer throw (181’-10”) and the discus (157’-1”) events. He finished second out of 30 throwers in the discus and third out of 21 throwers in the hammer at the large meet PLNU Collegiate Open. Ron’s Both now lead the NWC.
Track Men - Emmanuel Bofa Bofa won the 800 meters at the PLNU Spring Break Open with an automatic NCAA qualifying time of 1:48.69, setting a new school record and the best time in NCAA DIII (and NWC) to date.
March 2
Tennis Women - Rachel Burns Burns swept all four matches this weekend leading Whitworth to sole possession of first place in the NWC standings. She defeated two of the best singles players in the NWC in the same weekend, 7-6 (3), 6-4 and 6-2, 5-7, 6-3.
February 16
Tennis Women - Rachel Burns Burns led the Pirates to a pair of shutout wins against Pacific Lutheran and Puget Sound this weekend. Playing in the #1 position, she gave up only one singles game and one doubles game all weekend.
January 26
Swimming Men - Kalen Darling Darling helped the Whitworth men win their 70th consecutive NWC dual meet by winning three individual events against Whitman, including the 400 I.M and 500 free. His winning time in the 1,650-yard freestyle (16:13.57) is the best in the NWC this season.
Swimming Women - Ashley Lecoq Lecoq won two individual events and swam the butterfly leg of the winning medley relay at Whitman. Her time in the 100-yard butterfly (59.01) bettered her own NWC-leading time this season and the medley relay time (1:52.22) is the fastest in the conference this year.
January 12
Basketball Men - Nate Montgomery Montgomery averaged 26 points and 11 rebounds in Whitworth's two victories against Pacific and George Fox last week. His 33 points versus George Fox is a career high. He made 55.6% of his shots from the field and 75% of his free throws.
December 29
Basketball Men - David Riley Riley scored a season-high 26 points in the Whitworth win over Wisconsin-Stout. He averaged 18.0 points per game in the two victories for the Pirates this week, adding three steals and eight rebounds to his totals.
December 8
Swimming Men - Rory Buck Buck automatically qualified for the 2010 NCAA Division III Championships with his time in the 200 Breaststroke and reached the evening finals of a US Senior National Championship meet, the highest level of competition in the country.
November 24
Swimming Men - Michael Woodward Woodward shared high point honors with teammate Rory Buck by winning three individual events (100, 200, and 500 free) and swimming on four winning relays. He led Whitworth to the Northwest Invite team title.
Swimming Women - Natalie Turner Turner was the individual high point winner for the women at the Northwest Invite. Her times in the 200 free (1:54.59) and 500 free (5:06.19) are the best in the NWC this season and are NCAA provisional qualifying marks.
November 17
Swimming Men - Kalen Darling Darling won every event in which he swam over the weekend, including three individual events against NCAA DI Seattle University. All of his individual times, except the 100 back, are season bests in the NWC. His 400 I.M. (4:08.13) is an NCAA B cut provisional time.
Swimming Women - Ashley Lecoq Lecoq won three of her four individual events over the weekend, and nearly pulled a double against NCAA DI Seattle University, losing the 100 fly by a second. Her 200free time (1:56.98) is the best in the conference.
November 10
Swimming Men - Rory Buck Buck won all four individual events he swam in this weekend, including the 100 and 200 Fly. In the 100 Breast (57.91) and 200 Breast (2:08.11), he posted timer under the NCAA B (provisional) cut. He also swam the butterfly leg on the medley relay in each meet.
Football Special Teams - Zack Clow Clow averaged 42.2 yards on four punts. All of them were downed inside the 20 & two were downed inside the five yard line. He also threw a 30 yard touchdown pass as a backup quarterback for the Pirates.
Men’s Soccer Defense - Brian Sherpe Sherpe made two difficult first half saves, giving Whitworth the opportunity to neat Whitman, 1-0. Sherpe has seven shutouts this season.
November 3
Football Special Teams - Andy Largent Largent made the game-winning field goal (30 yards) in the second overtime against Pacific Lutheran and also connected on all three of his PAT tries.
October 27
Men’s Soccer Defense - Brian Sherpe Sherpe posted back to back shutouts in a pair of road matches against George Fox and Pacific. He made several key saves on Sunday to preserve a scoreless tie in the match with Pacific.
October 20
Football Offense - Taylor Eglet In his first career start, Taylor Eglet managed the Whitworth offense to 24 second quarter points with three touchdown passes. He did not throw an interception and the Pirates did not commit a turnover for the first time this season.
October 6
Cross Country Women - Dana Misterek Misterek was the first NCAA DIII runner across the line at the Willamette Invitational (17:51.13), helping Whitworth’s women finish as the top DIII women’s team in the meet. Dana finished fifth overall in a gigantic field of 203 runners.
Men’s Soccer Offense - Elly Bulega Bulega scored Whitworth’s first two goals in a win against Linfield this weekend. He also assisted on the first (eventual winner) and last goal vs. Willamette in a 3-0 Pirate victory.
September 22
Football Special Teams - Cailen Thomason Taking over for the injured Adam Anderson as Whitworth’s kick returner, Thomason averaged 29.5 yards per return, with a long of 47.
Men’s Soccer Defense - Brian Olson As the anchor of Whitworth’s back line, Olson led a defensive effort that limited two weekend opponents to a total of three shots on goal (two Saturday, one Sunday). Brian’s defense helped the Pirates secure two victories in conference play.
September 29
Cross Country Men - Nick Gallagher Gallagher was the top NCAA DIII runner across the line in a meet that included NCAA DI Gonzaga and NAIA nationally-top 10 Lewis-Clark State College. His time of 26:20/89 was good for a 6th place finish among 88 runners.
Cross Country Women - Dana Misterek Dana won the first-ever Erik Anderson Invite, defeating Janet Collar, who has run in two Olympic Trial meets, along with 101 other runners. Misterek’s time of 19:04.59 is on a five kilometer course.
September 22
Cross Country Women - Dana Misterek Misterek was the top NCAA DIII finisher in the Sundodger Invite, leading Whitworth to its highest-ever finish in the meet. The Pirates were behind only NCAA DII Alaska-Anchorage and NAIA power Simon Fraser. Dana’s time of 21:51.48 helped her to a fourth place individual finish.
September 15
Football Special Teams - Zack Clow Clow helped Whitworth win the field possession battle by averaging nearly 40 yards per punt and averaging 54 yards on his four kick offs.
September 8
Cross Country Women - Tonya Turner Turner won the 55-runner women’s race at the Whitman Invite by nine seconds, with a time of 14:34.76 in the 4k event. She led her 25th ranked Whitworth team to a win over #22 Whitman and NAIA #9 Lewis-Clark St.
