Scott McQuilkin has been on the Whitworth staff since 1985 when he was hired as the college's head baseball coach. In that capacity from 1985-90, McQuilkin coached the Pirates to three District titles, four consecutive regular season District championships, and earned three coach of the year awards. Following his Whitworth coaching tenure, McQuilkin served as an assistant baseball coach at Penn State University from 1991-93.
Dr. McQuilkin earned his Ph.D. from Penn State in sport history. His dissertation, "A History of Intercollegiate Athletic Reform During the Progressive Era, 1890-1920," focused on disputes regarding amateurism, brutality in football, and summer baseball. Since then, he has been published in the Journal of Sport History and Sports History Review. Dr. McQuilkin has also given presentations at North American Society for Sport History conferences, published several reviews on books about religion and sport, and completed a grant from the National Strength and Conditioning Association to write their institutional history. In addition, he has taught graduate and undergraduate sport history courses for the Kinesiology Department. He consulted on the movie "The Basket," for which he also had a small speaking role.
Dr. McQuilkin has been Whitworth's Director of Athletics since 1996, overseeing the operation of the college's 20 intercollegiate programs. He was recently a member of the NCAA Division III Baseball Committee, and he has a number of NCAA Championships events, including the 2000 Division III Cross Country Championships, the 2002 Division III Women's Volleyball Regional, and the first round of men's soccer and football playoffs. Dr. McQuilkin also teaches on the Core 350 team.
