PORTLAND, Ore. - Reigning NWC Pitcher of the Week Kyle Snell threw another complete game and five Pirate pitchers limited hitters to a pair of runs in the second game as visiting Whitworth swept a baseball doubleheader at Lewis & Clark on Saturday afternoon at the Houston Sports Complex.
The Pirates (5-9, 3-2 NWC) won their second and third in a row, while handing the Pioneers (6-6, 5-2 NWC) their first conference losses of the season. Whitworth shortstop Ryne Webb had five hits on the day, while catcher Dan Ramsey drove in five runs and second baseman Jon Whiteside scored four times. Game 1: Whitworth 4, Lewis & Clark 1 - box score Third baseman Alex Scarpelli gave the Bucs a 1-0 lead in the second inning with a solo home run, his third of the season. In the sixth inning Whiteside singled, stole second, went to third on a fly ball to center, then scored on a balk. Whitworth got two more insurance runs in the top of the eighth inning. Whiteside again led off with a single and eventually scored on an error. Dan Ramsey singled home Van Lierman later in the inning as the Pirates made the most of their five hits. L&C's Jordan Smiley allowed all four of the Pirate runs in 7.1 innings as his record fell to 1-2.
Game 2: Whitworth 10, Lewis & Clark 2 - box score Whitworth scored three more times in the third, as Ramsey and Tampien each drove in his second run of the game. Web singled home JJ Jones in the fourth to make the score 6-1. Then the Pirates broke it wide open in the sixth with three more runs. After loading the bases, Whitworth scored on a bases loaded walk by Dan Ramsey, and consecutive ground outs by Mitch Ramsey and Scarpelli. Brandon Zimmerman allowed only one run on three hits in five innings to improve to 2-2. Four different Whitworth relievers each pitched one inning to preserve the lead. Whitworth and Lewis & Clark will try to complete the three game series on Sunday amid predicted rain storms throughout the day. The final game of the series is scheduled to start at noon. |
