LOS ANGELES - There was no weariness in Chad Flett and his teammates on Friday afternoon. Only a couple hours after getting off of a plane from Spokane, Flett and the rest of the Whitworth baseball team won the opener of a three-game non-conference baseball series 9-3 at Occidental Friday afternoon.
Flett (2-2) earned his second win on the mound of the season with a complete game effort. He allowed three runs (two earned) while scattering 10 hits with seven strikeouts and no walks. The Pirates (10-15) scored four in the third to overcome an early 1-0 deficit, then scored four more in the seventh to build a comfortable lead. Alex Scarpelli hit a grand slam in the fourth inning for a 4-1 Pirate lead, his team-leading fifth of the season. In the seventh inning, Kyle Richardson tripled with the bases loaded, then scored on a throwing error to make the score 9-3. In the sixth inning, Jon Whiteside stole home while Richardson was caught in a run down. Whiteside finished 4 for 5, while Webb and Richardson each had a pair of hits. Whitworth and Occidental (14-15) will complete the three game series on Saturday with a double header beginning at 10:00 am |
