LOS ANGELES - Whitworth rallied from 5-0 deficits twice on Saturday, but it was not enough in either game as Occidental held off the Pirates 7-6 in game one and 6-4 in game two of a non-conference baseball doubleheader at Anderson Field. Jon Whiteside was 3 for 5 with three RBIs and three runs scored for Whitworth (10-17). Scott Ward also had three hits for the Bucs. The Tigers improved to 16-15 with the sweep.
Game 1: Occidental 7, Whitworth 6 - box score Whitworth rallied to within 5-2 with a pair of runs in the fifth inning. J.J. Jones came home on a ground out and Ward singled home Whiteside. Then the Pirates put four more on the board in the top of the seventh to take a 6-5 lead. Van Lierman and Ryne Webb had RBI singles and Alex Scarpelli had an RBI double in the rally. Whitworth led 6-5 until the bottom of the ninth inning when the Tigers rallied against a pair of Pirate pitchers. With two outs and a runner on base, Ryan Snell walked three consecutive Occidental batters to bring home the winning run. Game 2: Occidental 6, Whitworth 4 - box score The Pirates scored all four runs in the top of the fourth inning. After Jones singled home Webb to get the Bucs on the board, Whiteside drilled a three run home run to pull Whitworth within 5-4. It was Whiteside's first of the season. The Pirates had a chance to take the lead in the sixth inning after loading the bases with two outs. But Occidental pitcher Marcus Stroiber induced Lierman into a fielder's choice to end the inning. Snell started on the mound for the Pirates and allowed five runs in 2.2 innings. With his second loss of the day, his season record fell to 4-4. Coming up: Whitworth will continue on the road next weekend with a four game series at Puget Sound. The first three games will be Northwest Conference counters and the fourth game will be a non-conference contest. The Loggers took two of three at Whitman this weekend to improve to 12-15-1 overall and 11-7 in the NWC (third place). UPS took two of three games in Tacoma against the Pirates last season, including a pair of tight 7-6 victories. |
