Snell Salvages Third Game Win in NWC-Opening Pacific Series
March 4, 2007

MOSES LAKE , Wash. - After suffering through a doubleheader sweep on Saturday, one by blowout and one heartbreaker, the Whitworth baseball team responded to post a 10-0 win over Pacific on Sunday to salvage the third game of a three game series played at Larson Field in Moses Lake, Washington.

The win was set up by Ryan Snell's eight-inning, three hit pitching performance. His strong showing came one day after Whitworth pitchers allowed 20 earned runs, walked 10 batters and hit two more in the series opener.

Game 1: Pacific 22, Whitworth 2 - box score
Shortstop Zach Gantenbein went 4 for 6 at the top of the order, scoring three times, to lead the offensive outburst by the Boxers. Kyle Barksdale, who started the game as the DH, but also pitched 1.2 innings, drove in four runs for Pacific. Third baseman Ryan Bailey went 2 for 3 with three RBIs and three runs scored. Every starter in the Boxers' lineup had at least one hit as the team finished with 24.

Pacific scored two runs in the top of the first, then broke away with six more in the top of the third. They added five in both the seventh and ninth innings.

Derek Haner pitched six scoreless innings to pick up his first win of the season for the Boxers. He allowed only three hits and no runs. Whitworth's Jason Weatherman (0-2) gave up four runs in two official innings to pick up the loss.

Mitch Ramsey was the only Pirate with more than one hit as he went 2 for 2 in the game.

Game 2: Pacific 3, Whitworth 2 - box score
Pacific scored a pair of unearned runs in the seventh inning, then held off a Whitworth rally in the ninth to sweep the Saturday doubleheader.

Blaine Knuth (2-0) allowed only one run on two hits over eight innings to earn the win on the mound for the Boxers, while Allen Sugiyama picked up his first save of the season while allowing a single run in the ninth. Whitworth's Brandon Zimmerman (1-2) was the hard-luck losing pitcher for the Bucs, going all nine innings and allowing only one earned run on six hits.

Scott Yasumoto doubled home Bailey with the game's first run in the top of the second. Whitworth tied the game in the bottom of the inning when Dan Ramsey scored on Alex Scarpelli's gound out.

Yasumoto scored the go ahead run in the seventh when Barksdale reached on an error at shortstop. Barksdale eventually came around to score with two outs on Gantenbein's single, making both runs unearned.

Whitworth rallied in the ninth. With runners on second and third with one out, Van Lierman scored on J.J. Jones sacrifice fly. Later with two runners on base, Sugiyama induced Joel Tampien to fly out to right field for the final out.

Game 3: Whitworth 10, Pacific 0 - box score
Snell went eight innings on the mound for the Pirates, allowing only three hits while striking out three batters and walking three others to improve to 2-1 this season.

Whitworth broke open a tight pitchers' dual with nine runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. Until that point, Pacific's Brandon Larson (1-1) had allowed only Scott Wagstaff's RBI single in the fifth inning. In the seventh inning, Jones came up twice and drove in three runs with two singles while Scarpelli had a two-RBI double to highlight the nine-run, six hit inning.

Jeff Johnston tripled with one out in the fourth inning, but Snell left him stranded with a strike out and a ground out.

Next weekend Whitworth is scheduled to travel to Portland, Oregon to take on Lewis & Clark in a three game NWC series. Pacific will play at NCAA DI Portland on Wednesday before hosting Puget Sound next weekend for three games in their first home contests of the season.
