Whitworth Sweeps Whitman in Doubleheader

SPOKANE, Wash. - Whitworth managed to hold off Whitman 14-13 in the first game, then rolled to a 9-0 win in the second to sweep a Northwest Conference baseball doubleheader from the visiting Missionaries on Saturday afternoon at Merkel Field.

Dan Ramsey had four hits and seven runs batted in to lead the Pirates (9-14 overall, 7-7 NWC). Chad Flett allowed four hits over eight innings in the second game for his first victory at Whitworth.

Micah Babbitt drove in three runs in the opener for the Missionaries (3-19 overall, 1-10 NWC).

The teams traded leads four times before the Pirates finally escaped the ninth inning with a one run lead. There were seven errors in the game between the two teams, leading to a total of 13 unearned runs in the contest.

After Whitman led 2-1 in the second, Whitworth scored four runs in the bottom half, two of which came home on a single by Ramsey. But the Missionaries scored three of their own in the third and three more in the fourth for an 8-5 lead. Drew Pearsall and Brian Kitamura had RBI singles in the third and then in the fourth Whitman scored three unearned runs after a two-out error at second base.

The Pirates got one run back in the bottom of the fourth, then retook the lead with a six-run sixth inning. Kyle Richardson's two-RBI single was big hit.

But Whitman tied the game with two runs each in the seventh and eighth innings. Kitamura singled then scored later in the seventh, while Babbitt had a two-RBI single in the eighth.

Whitworth went back up by two runs in the bottom of the eighth when Scott Ward walked to force in a run and Van Lierman was hit by a pitch to force in a run. Austin Shackelford's RBI single brought the Missionaries within one in the ninth, but Whitworth reliever Stephen Baranowski got Mike Rathwell to ground into a double play to end the game.

Ramsey was 3 for 5 with four RBIs for the Pirates, while Richardson added three hits with two RBIs and three runs and J.J. Jones had two hits and scored three runs. Baranowski (1-0) picked up the win with 1.1 innings of relief.

Babbitt was 2 for 5 with three RBIs for Whitman. Shackelford and Kitamura finished with a pair of hits and a pair of RBIs each.

All of Whitworth's 11 hits were singles and 12 of Whitman's 14 hits were singles. Shackelford and Rathwell each had a double for the only extra base hits in the game.

Flett threw a four-hit shutout in the nightcap

Game 2: Whitworth 9, Whitman 0 - box score
Flett was simply overpowering in his second career start for the Pirates. He gave up four singles, struck out nine batters and walked only one in his eight innings.

Ryne Webb and Alex Scarpelli hit back to back home runs in the bottom of the first inning to give the Pirates an early 2-0 lead. The Pirates added single runs in the third and the fifth for a 4-0 lead.

Whitworth broke the game open in the bottom of the seventh with five runs. Ramsey had a two-run home run and Jones had an RBI double in the rally.

Webb and Scarpelli each went 3 for 5 for the Pirates, while Ramsey finished with three RBIs in the game. Jones added a pair of hits. Flett improved to 1-2 on the mound. Cory Cooper worked the final inning.

Whitworth and Whitman will complete the three game series on Sunday with a single game at noon.
