LEWISTON, Idaho - Whitworth University opened the 2008 baseball season with an impressive 6-5 win over NAIA top-ranked Lewis-Clark State, but fell hard in the nightcap to College of Idaho by a score of 27-4.
The Pirates earned their first win over the Warriors since 1999. Mitch Ramsey was 3-4 with two runs batted in, while Jon Whiteside was 2-5 with two rbi's in the win. Chad Flett pitched five innings to earn the victory on the mound. Whitworth jumped to a 1-0 lead in the first when Ramsey doubled home Kevin Valerio. The Pirates rallied for three more runs in the second, two of which came home on Whiteside's double. Flett allowed three runs on six hits in five innings of work. Ryan Snell and Brent Flyberg each pitched a pair of innings in relief and each allowed a single run. Flyberg was credited with a save. Six errors and eight walks doomed the Pirates in the nightcap as College of Idaho scored 27 runs on 21 hits. The Coyotes scored in six of the eight innings, tallying six in the fourth, nine in the sixth and five more in the seventh. Billy Rigsby went 2 for 5 with an rbi for the Pirates. Whitworth will face the same two teams on Sunday. |
