Pirates Swept Away at George Fox

NEWBERG, Ore. - George Fox University rolled to an easy win in the completion of Saturday's suspended game, then came from behind twice to complete a four-game sweep of visiting Whitworth University in Northwest Conference baseball action today at Morse Field. The Bruins improved to 19-9 overall, 15-5 NWC, while the Pirates fell to 11-19, 10-14.

Whitworth trailed 11-4 when play was suspended by darkness on Saturday in the bottom of the sixth inning. The break didn't help as GFU scored six more runs to pull further away.

Mac Collette and Dan Belet had RBI singles in the second inning to give Whitworth an early 2-0 lead. But the Bruins were up 6-2 by the bottom of the fourth, then broke through for five runs in the bottom of the fifth to break the game open.

Mitch Ramsey finished 4 for 5 at the plate with two runs batted in. Collette and Belet each had a pair of hits in the game. Pirate starting pitcher Nathan Johnson gave up nine runs (seven earned) on eight hits in four innings of work.

George Fox 5, Whitworth 4 (box score)

Whitworth took a 4-1 lead in the top of the fifth inning before George Fox rallied to win with two runs each in the fifth and the sixth.

Trailing 1-0, the Pirates tied the game in the fourth on Chad Flett's RBI single up the middle. Then Whitworth rallied for three runs in the fifth. Jon Whiteside, Mitch Ramsey and Dan Ramsey all had RBI singles with two out during the Pirates' four hit rally.

After getting two runners on in the fifth, GFU scored a pair of runs on ground outs. The Bruins got a game-winning, two-run home run by Jason Brown in the bottom of the sixth.

Ryan Snell went all six innings for the Pirates on the mound, allowing five runs (four earned) on nine hits. He struck out two and walked none.

George Fox 9, Whitworth 2 (box score)

Once again the Pirates led for much of the game before George Fox rallied for four runs in the bottom of the fourth, then four more in the bottom of the sixth.

Whiteside tied the game 1-1 with an RBI single in the top of the third, then Mitch Ramsey hit his second home run of the season in the top of the fourth to put the Pirates ahead.

But the Bruins went back in front in the bottom of the fourth with four runs. Brown had a two run double to start the rally. Matt Wycoff hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth to cap George Fox's second four-run rally.

Collin Gibbs started for Whitworth, allowing six runs on six hits with two strikeouts and three walks in five innings.

Whitworth returns home to host Pacific Lutheran University in a four game Northwest Conference series next weekend at Merkel Field.
