McMINNVILLE, Ore. - (From Linfield Sports Information Office) Reese McCulley and Cameron Larson slammed the door on Linfield’s series sweep of Whitworth Sunday afternoon. The Wildcats wrapped up a 4-0 weekend with a 4-0 win in game one and a 13-1 victory in the finale. GAME 1 In the opener the Wildcats needed just one inning of offense to get past the Pirates. A four-run third inning gave McCulley all the support he would need, going the distance while scattering six Whitworth hits. Through the first two and a third innings played the Wildcats were unable to figure out firm righthander Ryan Snell. Snell, a transfer from Washington State, was able to dictate at bats with a commanding fastball until Shannon Chung singled to spark the big inning. After Chung’s knock, Drew Van Cleave plated Chung with a double. David Bachofner followed with a walk before Stew Davis gave the ‘Cats a 2-0 lead with a single. Linfield would capitalize twice more in the frame, taking a 4-0 advantage. McCulley improved his record to 2-0 on the year. GAME 2 After quietly going through the first three innings of game two, Linfield broke the door down in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings by scoring all 13 runs. Cameron Larson got the win for the Wildcats, pitching six innings and giving up one run on five Pirate hits. Matt McCollum pitched a scoreless seventh to cap off the series sweep. Whitworth's Dan Ramsey gave the Pirates a 1-0 lead with a solo home run in the top of the fourth inning, his first of the year. The first Linfield blow came in the bottom of the fourth when a Davis homer got Linfield back even at one. Linfield would put three more on the board in the fifth and then a nine run sixth, which saw nine hits, gave the Wildcats a comfortable win. With the sweep, Linfield improves to 10-3 overall and sits at 6-2 in Northwest Conference play. Whitworth drops to 3-11 on the season and 2-6 in the NWC. |
