Whitworth Closes 2008 With Split at Whitman

WALLA WALLA, Wash. - Dan Ramsey had three hits and drove in three runs to lead Whitworth University to a 15-7 win over Whitman College in the nightcap of Sunday's Northwest Conference doubleheader at Borleske Stadium. The Missionaries (4-36 overall, 2-30 NWC) defeated the Pirates (13-27, 12-20) 3-1 in the opener.

Pete Stadmeyer held Whitworth to a single run on four hits as he out dueled Whitworth starter Ryan Snell in a battle of complete-game pitching efforts.

Stadmeyer (1-9) allowed four singles while striking out two and walking one. Whitworth scored its only run in the fourth when Chad Flett drove home Jon Whiteside with a ground out to third base.

Meanwhile Snell (1-7) allowed only two earned runs on seven hits. He struck out four and walked none in his six innings of work. Austin Shackelford drove in the game-winning run on a fielder's choice in the fifth inning and Whitman added an insurance run in the sixth.

Whitworth broke a 5-5 tie in the top of the sixth inning with a nine run rally, ensuring a season-ending win for the Pirates.

The Pirates scored a pair of runs in the second and third innings to take a 4-1 lead. Flett scored a run in the second then drove in a run in the third for Whitworth.

Whitman tied the game with three runs in the bottom of the third before both teams scored in single run in the fourth, creating a 5-5 tie.

After a scoreless fifth, the Pirates erupted for nine in the sixth. Scott Ward jump started the rally with a two run triple. Ben George added a two run double. With two outs, Dan Ramsey drove in two more runs with a single to conclude the rally.

After the Missionaries got two runs back in the bottom of the inning, Whiteside singled home Whitworth's final run in the top of the seventh.

Austin Knighton (1-1) earned the win on the mound in relief of starter Jason Weatherman. Weatherman went 4.0 innings, allowing five runs (two earned) on 10 hits with four strikeouts and no walks. Knighton went two innings and gave up two runs on two hits. Whiteside pitched the final inning and did not allow a run.

Flett, Snell, Weatherman and Whiteside all played their final games for Whitworth and will graduate this May.
