Whitworth Drops Doubleheader at Central Washington

ELLENSBURG, Wash. - Whitworth dropped the final two non-conference games of the season, losing both halves of a baseball doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon at Central Washington. The Wildcats won a topsy-turvy first game 10-9, the took the nightcap 5-1. Whitworth dropped to 6-26 this season while Central improved to 15-27.

GAME 1: CWU 10, Whitworth 9 - Complete box score
Ricky McKinney led off the bottom of the seventh inning with a walk-off home run, lifting the hosts to a 10-9 victory in a game in which each team posted a big rally.

After Whitworth grabbed the initial lead with an unearned run in the top of the third, Central scored six runs in the bottom half of the inning. Andrew Snowdon and Shelton Santiago each hit two-run home runs in the rally.

Whitworth responded with a seven-run fifth inning after Mitch Nelson and Dan Belet each belted two-run doubles during the comeback.

Four straight hits in the bottom of the fifth helped the Wildcats answer right back with three runs to take a 9-8 lead. But Whitworth tied the game in the sixth on Nelson's RBI single.

Ben George pitched the final three innings relief, but took the hard-luck loss in relief of starter Chad Flett and C.J. Perry. Nelson led the Pirates with two hits and three runs batted in. Kevin Valerio and Kyle Krustangel each added a pair of hits.

GAME 2: CWU 5, Whitworth 1 - Complete box score
Kevin Walkenhauer pitched a complete-game five hitter and the Wildcats steadily pulled away to win the second game 5-1.

Central scored an unearned run in the second, then added two more each in the third and fourth innings. Whitworth got its run in the top of the fourth on four straight hits with one out, but could not add more and left the bases loaded during the final two outs of the frame.

Nathan Johnson started and gave up four earned runs in his five innings on the mound. Landon Scott had two of the Pirates' five hits and scored the team's only run.

The Pirates will host Whitman in a four-game Northwest Conference series this weekend on Merkel Field. The teams will play two nine-inning games on Saturday, with two seven-inning contests scheduled for Sunday. Whitworth will recognize its graduating seniors on Sunday between games.
