PEORIA, Ariz. - They were the plays that Whitworth could not defend that hurt the Pirates the most in a 12-4 non-conference baseball loss to Hastings (Neb.) on Friday afternoon at the Peoria Sports Complex. Pirate pitchers issued nine walks and hit two other batters and those free passes led to half of the Broncos runs. Trailing 6-0 in the fourth inning, Whitworth rallied to pull within 6-4. Luis Tovar doubled home the first run and came around to score on Chad Flett's single during the rally. Flett and Mitch Ramsay each had a pair of hits to lead the Pirates at the plate. Saturday's semifinals are set. Whitworth (0-3) will play Washington & Lee (3-0), while Brandeis (2-1) plays Hastings (1-6), both at 11:00 a.m. The semifinal losers will play at 3:00 p.m. to determine third and fourth place.
