THE DALLES, Ore. - Whitworth let late-inning leads get away three times on Monday as the Pirates dropped a pair of heart-breaking Northwest Conference baseball contests to Pacific University at Quinton Street Ballpark. The Boxers improved to 7-10 overall and 4-8 in the NWC by sweeping the four-game series. The Pirates fell to 3-13, 1-10 after seeing a losing streak reach eight in a row. GAME 1: Pacific 4, Whitworth 3 - Complete box score Nathan Johnson pitched a 7-inning, complete-game gem for the Pirates, but it was not enough to hold off the Boxers, who scored the winning runs with two outs in the bottom of the seventh. Landon Scott scored the game's first run in the top of the second when he came home on a throwing error by Pacific's second baseman. The Boxers tied it in the bottom of the third when Joey Pulito homered to left field, the first hit allowed by Johnson. Each team scored a single run in the fourth - Whitworth's Chad Flett scoring from third on a wild pitch and Pacific's Nate Rasmussen hitting an RBI double. Mitch Ramsay led off the top of the seventh with a double and scored the go-ahead run on Scott's ground ball. In the bottom of the inning the Boxers had a runner on third with two outs. Scott Rowland doubled home the tying run. His pinch runner, Andy Tolbert, scored the winning run when Pirate shortstop Andrew Durant mishandled a slow roller and couldn't get a throw off to first during the next at-bat by Frankie Guros. Johnson went all seven innings, allowing only three earned runs on four hits. He struck out six and walked three. Rasmussen pitched the final inning and picked up the win for Pacific. GAME 2: Pacific 11, Whitworth 10 (8 innings) - Complete box score Whitworth rallied from a 7-3 deficit to go ahead 8-7 in the seventh, then went up 10-8 in the extra frame, but Pacific rallied one more time and won the game on Pulito's three-run walk off home run. The Pirates jumped up 3-0 in the first on RBI singles from JR Jarrell and Chad Flett. But the Boxers scored the next seven runs. Pulito had a two-run double in the second and Pacific picked up four more in the third. Nick McNeely had an RBI double and two unearned runs scored on an error at short stop. Whitworth pulled within 7-6 with three in the fourth, then tied the game on Dan Belet's RBI single in the sixth. Michael Takemura doubled home the go-ahead run in the top of the seventh. But the Boxers had the first of their two come-from-behind rallies in the bottom of the seventh. Kaeo Lau Hee doubled home the tying run that sent the game to extra frames. In the eighth Jarrell doubled home two runs to give the Bucs a 10-8 lead and it appeared Whitworth might salvage one win in the four-game series. But a hit batter and walk to the first two Boxers in the bottom of the eighth allowed Pulito to complete a staller day at the plate with his one-out, three-run home run to right center field. Rasmussen pitched the final three innings to pick up his second win of the day in relief. Ben George pitched the final three innings in relief for Whitworth and fell to 0-1. Pulito finished the day 3 for 7 with six RBIs and three runs scored. Ramsay and Flett each had four hits on the day to lead the Pirates. Whitworth is scheduled to host Lewis & Clark in a Northwest Conference series this coming weekend. The status of that series will depend on the condition of Merkel Field. The Pirates have yet to practice or play at home this season. Pacific will look to keep its winning streak going when the Boxers travel to Walla Walla to take on Whitman in a four-game NWC series. |
