Whitworth Drops Three at Willamette

SPOKANE, Wash. - Willamette came back to win the completion of Saturday's suspended game 11-6, then swept visiting Whitworth 4-3 and 7-1 in a Northwest Conference baseball doubleheader on Sunday, taking all three games between the schools.

The Pirates are now 4-18 overall and 2-14 in the Northwest Conference.

The Pirates led 6-2 through five and a half innings, but gave up seven runs in the bottom of the eighth and lost 11-6 in a game that began on Saturday but was suspended by rain with the Pirates leading 5-2 in the top of the third.

Once the game resumed on Sunday, Whitworth added another run in the top of the inning. The big blow on Saturday was a three-run home run by Luis Tovar, his second of the season. Kevin Valerio singled home the final run of the inning in the first at-bat of the day.

Willamette got two runs back in the sixth, then broke through with seven runs in the eighth. David Tufo had a two-run single that tied the game. Later in the inning Mitchell Rowan hit a grand slam that broke the game open.

Nathan Johnson pitched well for Whitworth for six innings, allowing four runs (three earned) on seven hits with three strikeouts and three walks. Collin Gibbs (0-4) suffered the loss in relief.

Valerio and JR Jarrell each had a pair of hits for the Pirates.

SUNDAY GAME 1: Willamette 4, Whitworth 3 - Complete box score

Kyle Stalker's two-run home run in the bottom of the third inning was the difference as the Bearcats edged the Pirates 4-3.

Stalker drove in the first run with a single in the first, then hit is fifth homer of the season in the third to give Willamette a 3-0 lead.

Whitworth rallied to tie with a two-out rally in the top of the fourth. Mitch Nelson singled home the first run, then Taylor McMahon singled home two more.

But Doug Bloom singled in the eventual game-winning run in the bottom of the fourth.

Peter Birdwell (1-5) pitched all six innings for the Pirates, allowing four runs (two earned) on six hits with six strikeouts and three walks.

McMahon and Andrew Durant each had a pair of hits for the Bucs.

SUNDAY GAME 2: Willamette 7, Whitworth 1 - Complete box score

The game was scoreless through three innings before the Bearcats plated two in the fourth and broke open the game with five in the fifth.

Chris Bartenhagen singled home Whitworth's only run in the top of the seventh. Bartenhagen, Landon Scott and Mitch Nelson all had two hits apiece for the Pirates, who out-hit the Bearcats 8-7.

Chad Flett (1-2) went the first four innings on the mound for Whitworth, allowing two runs on only two hits (a two-run homer by Colin Clark), with six strikeouts. He walked two batters and hit three others.

Whitworth will host league-leading George Fox next weekend at Merkel Field. The teams will play two nine-inning games on Saturday and two seven-inning games on Sunday. Both days are scheduled to start at noon.
