Jarrell Powers Whitworth Past Whitman in Saturday Sweep

SPOKANE, Wash. - Freshman JR Jarrell went 7 for 9 at the plate while driving in 10 runs to lead Whitworth to a sweep of visiting Whitman in a Northwest Conference baseball doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Merkel Field.

The Pirates improved to 8-26 overall and 6-20 in the NWC while the Missionaries fell to 3-28, 2-23.

GAME 1: Whitworth 22, Whitman 5 - Complete box score
Whitworth opened a 10-0 lead through three innings and cruised to its largest offensive output of the season.

Jarrell was the offensive star for the Pirates after going 5 for 7 and driving in six runs. Chris Bartenhagen added three hits, including a pair of home runs, while Kyle Krustangel also had three hits and drove in four runs.

Bartenhagen's two-run home run highlighted Whitworth's six-run second inning. He added a solo shot to lead off the third. He now has four homers this season.

The Pirates answered Whitman's three-run rally in the fifth with one of its own in the bottom of the inning. Matt Morris-Rosenfeld homered to lead off the inning, his third of the season. Then Jason Sease and Brian Kitamura added RBI triples. Krustangel's RBI double highlighted Whitworth's half of the inning.

The Pirates added three more in the bottom of the sixth to go ahead 16-3. Jay Richards had a two-run double in the top of the seventh for Whitman.

The Bucs tallied four more in the bottom of the seventh. Jarrell doubled home two of those runs. In Whitworth's two-run eighth inning he added another RBI single.

Nathan Johnson pitched the first seven innings for Whitworth to improve to 2-6 this season. He gave up five runs on eight hits with six strikeouts and two walks.

Blaine Mercado gave up 12 earned runs in five innings pitched to fall to 1-9 for Whitman.

GAME 2: Whitworth 15, Whitman 5 (7 inn.) - Complete box score
Jarrell homered twice and drove in four more runs, while Liam O'Brien pitched five innings of two-hit relief to lead the Pirates to the win in the nightcap. The game ended after the top of the seventh due to the 10-run rule agreed upon before the first pitch.

Mitch Nelson gave Whitworth a 3-0 lead in the first with his third home run of the season, but Whitman rallied to take a 5-4 lead in the top of the third inning. Erik Korsmo hit his third homer of the season, a two-run shot, to key the Missionaries' three-run third.

Jarrell tied the game by leading off the bottom of the third with his fourth homer of the season. The Pirates tacked on two more in the inning on RBI singles by Taylor McMahon and C.J. Perry to take a 7-5 lead.

Whitworth scored four in the fourth on only two hits. With the bases loaded a run scored on a hit batter, a walk and two sacrifice flies.

Jarrell added a three-run homer in the fifth, his fifth shot of the season. The final run of the game came in the bottom of the sixth on Andrew Durant's sacrifice fly and that was the difference when Whitman could not score in the top of the inning.

O'Brien came on in relief of Peter Birdwell, who allowed five runs on four hits and five walks. O'Brien picked up his first win of the season when he shut out Whitman on two hits over the final five innings. He struck out one and did not walk a batter.

Peter Olson went the first five innings for Whitman and gave up 14 runs on 14 hits to fall to 1-8.

The Pirates and Missionaries will finish the series, and their seasons, with another doubleheader on Sunday. Both games are scheduled to go seven innings and the first pitch will be at noon.

Whitworth will recognize seniors Chad Flett, Mitch Ramsay, Brent Flyberg, Matt Monahan and Erik Nilson between games.
