Six Errors Leads to Five Unearned Runs
CALDWELL, Idaho - Whitworth University never gave itself a chance to win Sunday's finale of a three-game series at College of Idaho. The visiting Pirates committed a season-high six errors and allowed five unearned runs in an 11-5 loss to the Coyotes. Whitworth dropped to 1-9 while C of I improved to 10-2 with its ninth straight win. The C of I started quickly, as RBI ground outs by Diego Robles and Jarel Lewis in the opening frame made it 2-0. After the Pirates cut the lead in half in the third on a Coyote throwing error that scored Marlowe Peter, the Coyotes would take advantage of a throwing error on an Arehart bunt single to plate two in the bottom of the inning. Trailing 6-1, Whitworth made it interesting, getting a two-run Dan Belet double and a Greg Hata sacrifice fly in the sixth to cut the margin to 6-4. The Bucs then put runners at second and third with no outs in the eighth. However, Coyote reliever Jesse Vermillion struck out three batters to get out of the jam unscathed. The Yotes would put it away in the bottom of the frame, scoring fiver runs – taking advantage of an error and a dropped third strike. Chad Yeggy notched his second win of the year, going six innings of five-hit ball. Lewis and Robles each added two RBI in the win. Belet and Kyle Krustangel each had two hits for the Bucs. Whitworth will head to California for a three-game series at Menlo College next weekend. |
