Valerio and Belet Receive Honorable Mention SPOKANE, Wash. - Whitworth University third baseman Landon Scott has been named First Team All-Northwest Conference, while designated hitter Kyle Krustangel is a Second Team selection, according to the official 2010 NWC baseball list which was released today by the league. Both Kevin Valerio and Dan Belet received honorable mention consideration.
Scott's (So., Kennewick, Wash. - Kennewick) batting average of .465 this season currently leads the NWC, pending completion of the NCAA tournament. His batting average is the second highest in school history, behind only Ryan Clements' average of .479 in 1987. Scott led the team in at-bats (159), hits (74), doubles (12), runs scored (40) and runs driven in (40), slugging average (.667) and on-base percentage (.506). He was named Northwest Conference baseball Student-Athlete of the Week on April 13th and on May 5th. Krustangel (Jr., Spokane, Wash. - Big Bend CC) flourished this season in the clean-up spot in the batting order. He hit .372, leading the team with nine home runs while adding eight doubles. He drove in 35 runners. Krustangel also topped the team with 17 walks, which helped him post an on-base percentage of .475. Valerio (So., OF, Kennewick, Wash. - Kennewick) spent much of the season as the Pirates' lead-off hitter. He batted .340 and was second on the team in runs scored (34) and stolen bases (11-14). He committed only one error in 103 defensive chances in center field. Belet (Sr., OF, Missoula, Mont. - Hellgate) had the best overall offensive numbers of his career. He batted .322 with eight doubles and 24 runs batted in. He also led the Pirates in stolen bases (12-13). His diving catch for the final out saved a win in the series finale at Willamette. The Pirates finished 13-27 overall and 10-14 in the NWC in 2010, a three-game improvement in head coach Dan Ramsay's second season with the Pirates. |
