Head Coach - Matt Logie
Matt Logie became head basketball coach at Whitworth University in May of 2011 after a successful term as Associate Head Coach at Lehigh University, a member of of the NCAA Division I Patriot League. The eighth leading scorer in Lehigh school history, Logie completed his eighth season as an assistant coach and second as the associate head coach at his alma mater in the spring of 2011. Logie re-joined the Mountain Hawks coaching staff for his second stint prior to the 2007-08 season and played a large role in leading Lehigh to the 2009-10 Patriot League regular season and tournament championships. Logie has coached under several mentors, including current Lehigh head coach Brett Reed. Billy Taylor coached Logie during his senior season at Lehigh before Logie joined Taylor's Mountain Hawk staff for three seasons. Taylor is now the head coach at Ball State University. Logie also worked for Jim Christian at Kent State in 2006-07. Christian is now the head coach at Texas Christian. After returning to his alma mater, Logie's role as the top assistant coach and associate head coach at Lehigh played out in several ways, most notably in the recruitment of C.J. McCollum who was selected as the 2010 Patriot League Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year after leading all NCAA Division I freshman in scoring, and in his scouting and game planning for the 2010 Patriot League Tournament and NCAA First Round game against overall-top seed Kansas.
In 2010 Logie was named as the top Patriot League Assistant Coach in men's basketball in a Foxsports.com Coaches Poll and this season he was recognized as one of the top 50 Assistants in Mid-to-Low Major College basketball by Hoopscoop on-line magazine. Logie spent the 2006-07 season at Kent State University as the Director of Basketball Operations in which he was responsible for the academic progress of the program's student-athletes in addition to developing video edits for scouting and skill development and assisting in practice development, skill instruction development and team conditioning. Logie was also responsible for all of the program's administrative duties, including team travel, film exchange and compliance. Logie originally served on the Lehigh staff for three seasons through 2006, first as the Director of Basketball Operations and then as an assistant coach. Among his many duties while at Lehigh, Logie was responsible for on and off campus recruiting, opponent scouting, individual skill development sessions, summer camps and team travel. He was instrumental in the Mountain Hawks 2004 Patriot League Championship and NCAA Tournament appearance. During his first three years on Lehigh's staff, the Brown and White won the most games in school history. During his playing days at Lehigh, Logie scored 1,524 career points and his 262 three-point field goals is still a school record. In addition, Logie is the top free throw shooter in the history of the Patriot League at 90.7 percent. He graduated from Lehigh in 2003 and earned his Master's in Educational Leadership in 2006. Logie grew up surrounded by the game of basketball as the grandson of Mercer Island High School head coach Ed Pepple. Pepple, a legend in Washington's high school ranks, won 952 games and four state championships in 49 years as a head coach, 42 of which came at Mercer Island. His 1985 squad, which featured future Duke star Quin Snyder, is regarded by many as one of the Washington's greatest teams. His career win total is nearly 300 more than Pat Fitterer of Ellensburg, who is next on the list with 680 victories in 34 years. Logie was part of two state championships while playing for his grandfather from 1997-99. He earned First Team All-State as a senior while leading the Islanders to a 27-3 record and a state 3A championship in 1999.
Assistant Coach - Damion Jablonski Damion Jablonski joins Matt Logie on the Pirate basketball bench after the two spent one season on the Mountain Hawks' staff in 2010-11. Jablonski joined Lehigh after three years in various coaching roles at Oakland University in Michigan. As an assistant at Lehigh, Jablonski was tasked with recruiting, scouting and player development, as well as pre-season conditioning and program budget. While at Oakland for three seasons, Jablonski's roles included video coordinator, strength and conditioning and scouting. During his final season the Golden Grizzlies went 26-9 while winning the Summit League regular season and conference tournament. He began his coaching career in 2005 as an assistant coach at Livonia Franklin HS in Livonia, Michigan. Jablonski graduated from Gonzaga University in 2000 and went on to work as an engineer at Ford Motor Company from 2001-2007. He grew up in Polson, Montana.
Assistant Coach - Jase Wambold Jasen Wambold will join the Whitworth coaching staff in 2011-12. Wambold is very familiar with the Northwest Conference after playing collegiately at Pacific University in 2003 and 2004. Most recently Wambold spent three seasons as an assistant coach at Aloha High School in Beaverton, Oregon, where he assisted with all aspects of the program. Prior to that he was an assistant coach at Frenchtown High School in Frenchtown, Montana for one year (2007-08) and an assistant coach at Forest Grove (Ore.) High School for the 2006-07 season. He attended Edmonds (Wash.) Community College and played basketball for two seasons before transferring to Pacific. He earned his B.A. from Pacific in 2005 and a Master at Teaching from Pacific in 2007.
Assistant Coach - Matt Melka Matt Melka brings plenty of local connections to his first season on the coaching staff at Whitworth after attending Washington State University, Spokane Falls Community College and nearby Mt. Spokane High School. Melka served as the team manager at WSU for the previous two seasons, assisting in many of the behind-the-scenes functions in practices and at games. He graduated at WSU in May of 2011. Melka has also coached in NBC camp programs for three years from July of 2007 to August of 2010. Prior to that he was the freshman coach and a varsity assistant at MSHS during the 2006-07 and 2007-08 seasons while he attended SFCC.
