LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- Host Occidental College outscored Whitworth College 8-2 over the final 1:30 to pull out a 68-67 victory in a non-conference men's basketball game at the Occidental Holiday Classic on Monday night.

Whitworth (7-3) led 65-60 with possession and 1:30 to play before Pirate guard Bryan Williams was stripped by Occidental's Gemayal McBride and Williams was called for an intentional foul. McBride made both free throws and Zach Phillips followed with a jumper to pull the Tigers within 65-64. George Tucker answered with a basket for Whitworth with under 50 seconds to play, but McBride scored again quickly to pull Oxy back within one point. The Pirates missed on their next possession with 20 seconds left and Justin Webb got open underneath for the Tigers and was fouled with five seconds to play. He made both free throws for the winning points. James Jones' final try was no good. The final score was Occidental's only lead of the second half.

The Tigers (8-1) led the most of the first half. A fast break basket by Gyan Alexander gave Oxy a 29-23 lead with under seven minutes to play. But the Pirates closed the half on a 15-4, including seven points by George Tucker, to take a 38-33 lead into the intermission.

Whitworth's Jon Young made six three pointers to lead all scorers with 21 points. Tucker finished with 17 points, while Williams totaled 12 points and five assists before fouling out. Kevin Hasenfus recorded another double double with 10 points and a game-high 12 rebounds.

Sam Betty led Occidental with 15 points and nine boards. Connor Whitman and Zach Phillips scored 12 points each, while McBride finished with 10 points.

The Occidental Holiday Classic concludes tomorrow. Whitworth will play Pomona-Pitzer at 5:30 p.m., while Occidental will host 4th-ranked Amherst at 7:30 p.m.
