BURLINGAME, Calif. -- Host Whitworth College (Wash.) and California Lutheran University set up a winner-take-all game for the championship of the Whitworth - St. Vincent de Paul Invitational after winning their games on Saturday afternoon at Burlingame High School. The Pirates and Kingsmen will meet at 3:00 pm on Sunday afternoon, which was initially determined by a preset schedule. Lewis & Clark College (Ore.) will play UC Santa Cruz at 1:00 pm. UC Santa Cruz 54 Whitworth led by as many as 23 points (36-13) in the first half after a three pointer by Jon Young, and by as many as 38 points in the game (75-37) with just over eight minutes to play. Kevin Hasenfus posted a double-double of 14 points and 14 rebounds to lead Whitworth's domination of the boards. The Pirates outrebounded the Banana Slugs 48-21, including a 20-5 edge in offensive rebounds. Rob Simons came off the bench to add 14 points for Whitworth. Williams and Young added 12 and 11 respectively, while Lance Pecht finished with 10 points. Jimmy Herrera led UCSC with 14 points, while Murphy Holmes came off of the bench for 11 points and a team-high four rebounds. Jon Mercado also scored 11 points off of the bench. 73, Lewis & Clark 52 CLU struggled out of the gate, missing 11 of its first 13 shots and giving away five turnovers as L&C took an 11-4 lead with 11:30 to play in the first half after a three pointer by Pioneer forward David Berggren. The Kingsmen took their first lead of the game (19-18) after a three pointer by J.R. Hardy with just under four minutes to go in the half. Another Berggren three pointer put the Pioneers back on top 24-21, but it would be L&C's final lead of the game. CLU closed the half on a 10-1 run to take a 31-25 edge into the locker rooms. Lewis & Clark pulled within 31-29 early in the second half after a basket by Larry Johnson, but the Kingsmen would answer with a 7-0 run, including a three pointer by Chad Acerboni, to retake control. The lead soon reached double digits, and CLU's biggest lead was the final score. Sergei Lapiashinski led the Kingsmen with 16 points, while Brandon Bush scored 15 points off of the bench. Zach Miller also came off of the bench to post a double double of 11 points and 11 rebounds. Acerboni finished with 10 points and Rocky Pedden added 11 boards to go with seven points. Berggren led L&C with nine points as the Pioneers struggled from the field, shooting only 34.5% as a team and 28.6% from three point range. Nick Thierry and Blake Spurgin each added seven points. None of the three leading scorers started for L&C. Johnson and Thomas Tillery led the starters with six points each and both also had a team-high four rebounds. Cal Lutheran improved to 3-4 with the win, while L&C fell to 3-6.
