TACOMA, Wash. -- (From UPS SID Office) Guard Ryan DeLong hit the game-winning free throw with 30 seconds remaining as the Puget Sound Loggers survived the offensive attack of the Whitworth Pirates to win a Northwest Conference men's basketball game, 106-105, on Friday night in Tacoma, Wash.

Bryan Williams' lay in attempt as time expired was no good and Whitworth's attempt to end a 21-game NWC home winning streak by UPS came up just short.

In the first half, the Loggers (11-2, 5-0 NWC) took the early lead over the Pirates (9-5, 3-2 NWC), leading by as many as 18 as Puget Sound took a 60-49 lead into halftime. Senior Chase Curtiss scored 18 of his eventual 22 in the first period.

The second half was another story as Whitworth opened the half with a 14-2 run to gain the lead. The Loggers eventually retook the lead and held it until James Jones hit a three-pointer with 3:25 remaining to give Whitworth the 100-97 advantage. A jumper by Lance Pecht and a lay-up for Jones gave the Pirates a five point lead with just under two minutes remaining.

Puget Sound fought back, converting on four-straight free throws to get within one and then retaking the lead on a DeLong Jumper with 54 seconds remaining. Jon Young made a free-throw to tie the game up but a foul by Pecht gave DeLong the chance to hit the game winning free throw and he took advantage to give Puget Sound the 106-105 win.

The Loggers were led by 23 points apiece from Zack McVey and Taylor Marsh. McVey added nine rebounds to his totals, barely missing out on the double-double. Curtiss finished with 22 points, including four three-pointers, while freshman guard Antwan Williams and DeLong finished with 13 and 12 respectively.

Whitworth was led by a game-high 30 points for Jones, who came off the bench and was a perfect seven-for-seven on his free throws. Pecht added 24 points and eight rebounds in the losing effort while Young recorded 20 points as well. The Pirates shot 61% from the field during the game, including 76% (22/29) in the second half.

Whitworth will head to Pacific Lutheran on Saturday while the Loggers will play host to the Whitman Missionaries. Both games begin at 6:00 p.m.
