Whitworth Runs Away to First Win of 2006-07

WHEATON, Ill. -- Whitworth shot over 65% from the field to run away to a 95-67 win over Eastern (Pa.) in the first round of the Lee Pfund Classic on Friday night at Wheaton College.

A Jon Young three pointer gave the Pirates a 15-4 lead less than four minutes into the game and Whitworth led by less than double figures only one time the rest of the way. The Pirates led by 22 (48-26) at halftime and by as many as 34 points (91-57) after a dunk by Ryan Symes with 3:53 to play.

James Jones led all players with 27 points. He made 11 of 17 shots from field, including 5 of 9 from beyond the arc. Ryan Symes had a perfect night for the Bucs, making all seven of his shots from the field and all four of his free throw attempts for 18 points. He added a team high seven rebounds.

Bryan Williams posted a double double with 11 points and 12 rebounds. Young added 16 points as four Pirates reached double figures.

Bobby Black led Eastern with 11 points, while Lenny DiMaria added 10.

Whitworth outrebounded Eastern 30-20 and forced 19 turnovers while committing only 11.

The Pirates will take on the hosts in the tournament championship on Saturday at 8:00 pm (EST). Wheaton defeated Franklin 81-78 on Friday.
