SPOKANE, Wash. -- Bryan Williams, Whitworth's all-time leader in assists, added another milestone to his career tally as he scored 20 points to lead the Pirates past visiting George Fox 90-64 in a Northwest Conference men's basketball game on Saturday night in the Whitworth Fieldhouse.
With his 20 points Williams becomes the 17th player in Whitworth history to top 1,000 points for his career. He is the first player in Whitworth history to surpass both 1,000 points and 500 assists during his career. Ryan Symes added 18 points and James Jones scored 17 for the 13th-ranked Pirates (19-2, 10-2), who pulled away with a strong second half. Whitworth, the national Division III leader in team field goal percentage, made 56.6% (30-53) from the field, including 52.6% (10-19) from three point range. Chris Parker scored a game high 22 points, including 16 in the first half to help the Bruins (11-10, 6-6) stay close through intermission. He added a game-high nine rebounds. Evan Atwater came off of the bench to score 13 points for George Fox. The Bruins were held to 35.2% (19-54) shooting from the floor. While Whitworth never trailed, the Pirates did not gain a comfortable advantage until after halftime. Whitworth jumped to an early 13-2 lead, but the Bruins battled back to within one point twice in the first half. The second time came after six straight points by Parker pulled George Fox to within 34-33 with 1:20 to play. But Williams followed a free throw with a three pointer just before the buzzer to give the Bucs a 38-33 halftime advantage. Whitworth outscored George Fox 13-2 to open the second half as well, and this time the Pirates made the lead stick as the Bruins never pulled within double digits the rest of the way. A three point play by Jones gave Whitworth a 63-41 lead with just over 12 minutes left, and George Fox would never get closer than within 17 points the rest of the game. The Pirates' largest lead was 90-63 after a breakaway dunk by reserve post Nate Montgomery with six seconds left. Whitworth continues to hold a one-game lead in the NWC standings over Puget Sound and Lewis & Clark, who are both 9-3 in league games. The Pirates play at UPS on Friday night in their next contest. George Fox continues on the road at Willamette, also next Friday night. Go to Athletics Home Page > Men's Basketball > Sports Releases > |
