Willemsen led the Pirates with 14 points

The Pirates opened the game on a 6-0 run, with a three from Bryan Williams, followed by a three from Colin Willemsen. The Pioneers answered with a long-range three from David Berggren, and the tone and pace of the game became immediately apparent. With every comfortable six-point Whitworth lead, the Pioneers would immediatley answer with a basket, keeping the Pirates close. The Pioneers came within one, 24-23, on a Mark Robinowitz three-pointer with 8:26 remaining in the first half. Whitworth answered with a strong move to the basket by Kevin Hasenfus. Whitworth clung to a 35-32 advantage at the break.

The Pioneers first tied the game 37-37 on a Joey Toboni layup with 16:58 left in the game. Whitworth made a pair of freethrows to take back the two-point advantage. The two teams went back-and-forth, answering each other's scores with seven ties in the next 13 minutes of play. The Pioneers held a one-point advantage, 59-58, when the Pirates' Kevin Hasenfus was fouled and sent to the line with 3:48 left in the game. Hasenfus made one of his two freethrows, knotting the game at 59. The Pioneers got a two-point lead on a jumper by Tillery. Hasenfus was fouled and back at the line with a chance to tie, and once again hit just one freethrow, with the Pioneers holding a 61-60 advantage with 59 seconds on the clock. Gene Rivera attempted a three, and missed, but Thomas Tillery got the offensive board and hit a jumper in the paint to give the Pioneers a three-point lead, 63-60 with 34 seconds remaining. Jon Young tried a jumper on the opposite end with 11 seconds left that was rebounded by the Pioneers' Corey Allen. Toboni was fouled and sent to the line, hitting both of his free throws to give the Pioneers the 65-60 edge with 8 seconds left in the game. Another Whitworth missed three and a Pioneer rebound sent Mark Robinowitz to the line to seal a 66-60 upset for the Pioneers.

The Pirates, one of the best shooting teams in the nation (54.1 from the field as a team), were held to just 36.4% shooting in the second half, and 44.4% for the game. The Pioneers hit 10-30 three-point attempts en route to their win.

David Berggren hit five three-points, scoring 16 points in the game. Thomas Tillery had 13 points and seven rebounds. Gene Rivera had another four block game.
