GAME
1 CLU opened up a 13-point lead, 52-39, on a Zach Miller dunk with 6:39 to play, but needed a missed free throw with 55 seconds to play and a pair of free throws from Andrew Meier at the 42 second mark to hold onto its lead. Meier finished the game with a game-high 19 points and 12 rebounds. CLU opened up a seven point lead, 14-7, just over five minutes into play led by five points each from Acerboni and Miller. Kingsmen junior Rocky Pedden knocked down a long 3 after an inadvertent horn caused a bit of confusion with 15 seconds to go in the half, and LC junior Thomas Tillery missed a driving layup on the final possession. Joey
Toboni, who totaled a team-high 16 for the Pioneers, knocked
down a 3 to cut the gap to 10 with 5:17 to go and barely a minute
later a Gene Rivera layup pulled LC within five, 56-51. Miller
scored on a layup to push the gap back to seven, but Mark Robinowitz
hit a 3 from the corner to cut the gap to two, 62-60, with 1:16
to play. LC forced CLU into its 17th turnover of the day on
the next possession, but Rivera hit 1-of-2 free throws with
a chance to tie the score with 55 seconds to play. Robinowitz
was whistled for an intentional foul on Meier and he knocked
down both for a three point edge. The Kingsmen missed on the
ensuing offensive possession and Dave Berggren's 3 from the
top of the arc caromed out for the Pioneers. GAME
2 The Bruins (3-1) got a game-high 16 points from Phil Hue-Weller, including a big 3 from the corner as the shot clock ran out that stopped a 10-0 Alvernia run midway through the second half. Junior guard Brent Satern finished with 13 points and a game-high nine assists. Shawell paced the Crusaders with 17 points and Matt King and Garrett Etzel added 10 points apiece. Both teams opened the game shooting well from the floor and the Crusaders held a six point lead, 9-3, with three minutes gone. But George Fox connected on nearly 80 percent of its shots in the early going as the Bruins quickly erased the six point deficit and built a 13 point lead at the 11:05 mark. Chris Parker (Alohkicked off what amounted to a 15-0 spurt with five straight points, and when Satern dropped in a layup the Bruins were up 24-11. Alvernia fought back and when Shawell hit a pair from the line, the Crusaders went to the locker room down eight, 35-27. Ryan Finger scored on a layup to pull Alvernia within two, 44-42, at the 13:17 mark and it appeared the Crusaders would get the ball back with a chance to tie or take the lead, but Heu-Weller was pure on a fading 3 from deep in the left corner. The Bruin lead quickly went back to eight when Hue-Weller stroked a 3 on the next possession, and the Crusaders eventually pulled even on Shawell's 3 with just under five minutes to play. GAME
