TACOMA, Wash. -- (From UPS Sports Information) Using 18 three-pointers for the game, the 18th-ranked Puget Sound Loggers earned the regular season sweep over the 13th-ranked Whitworth Pirates, 95-90 in overtime, in a Northwest Conference men's basketball game on Friday night at Memorial Fieldhouse in Tacoma, Wash. The Loggers forced overtime after erasing a 12-point Whitworth lead over the final 5:25 of regulation.
In the first half, the two evenly-matched squads fought back and forth before the Loggers (16-6 overall, 10-3 NWC) went on a 16-6 run over the final minutes of the first half to take a 45-38 lead into the break. Sophomore forward Jason Foster led the charge, making four from behind-the-arc on his way to 16 first-half points. In the second half, the Pirates (19-3, 10-3) were able to retake the lead at the 14:10 mark on a Calvin Jurich lay-up and eventually pushed the lead to 12 points with just 5:25 remaining on a three pointer by Bryan Williams. The Loggers were able to take advantage of free-throw opportunities and Pirate foul trouble to slowly shrink the lead. After Williams and post Kevin Hasenfus fouled out, a three-pointer by Foster with 26 seconds remaining gave the Loggers a one-point lead, 83-82. Whitworth's Jon Young hit a pair of free throws to give the Bucs a one-point lead with 13 seconds remainings but Young fouled Antwan Williams with six seconds left on the clock. Williams was able to hit the front end of two free throws to send the game into overtime. In the extra period, the Loggers took over, scoring the periods first 10 points to force the Pirates to foul. Whitworth was able to score some late points but it was too little, too late as the Loggers earned the win, 95-90. The Loggers were paced by 29 points and eight rebounds from Foster. Taylor Marsh chalked up 17 points while Robert Krauel scored 16 points to go with 10 rebounds to collect the double-double. Williams nearly recorded a double-double, adding 11 assists to his nine points in the win. The Loggers were deadly from behind the arc, making 18-of-32 shots for 52.9-percent. Whitworth was led in scoring by 18 points from Hasenfus. James Jones added 15 points while Bryan Williams collected 14 in the loss. Colin Willemsen came off the bench to add 14 of his own. The Pirates shot just 60-percent from the charity stripe, making 15-of-25 attempts. Whitworth and UPS now trail Lewis & Clark (11-3) by a half game in the NWC standings. The Pirates will play at Pacific Lutheran on Saturday, while UPS hosts Whitman. L&C is idle, creating a potential for a three way tie with one week left in the regular season.
