PASADENA, Calif. -- David Riley broke a Whitworth University single-game record for three pointers while leading the visiting Pirates to an 88-59 win at California Institute of Technology on the final day of the Caltech/Cal Lutheran Classic at CIT's Bruan Center.
Riley (Fr., G, Palo Alto, Calif.) scored 29 points and grabbed eight rebounds to lead Whitworth (1-1). He made 8 of 13 three point attempts and was five of five from the free throw line. His eight three pointers breaks the school record of seven originally set by Brian Meyers against Westmont College during the 1986-87 season and matched by three others. Riley's record-tying three-point shot turned into a four point play as he was fouled on the attempt. Ross Nakamura (Jr., G, Moraga, Calif.) scored 12 points and dished six assists, while Nate Montgomery (So., P, Sammamish, Wash.) added 14 points and six rebounds. Drew Bruns (Fr., G, Mission Viejo, Calif.) came off of the bench for 11 points. Bryan Hires led Caltech with 19 points and Matthew Dellatore added 12 points for the Beavers. Whitworth outrebounded Caltech 43-28 and forced 20 turnovers by the Beavers. The three other players who shared the previous single game three-pointer record with Meyers were: Gabe Jones (made against Linfield in 1995-96), Ryan Nelson (against PLU in 2000-01) and Jon Young (against George Fox in 2003-04). The Pirates will return to California this coming weekend to participate in the University of Redlands Lee Fulmer Invitational. Whitworth will play Southwestern College (Ariz.) in the first round on Thursday at 2:00 p.m. The Bucs will take on either Pomona-Pitzer or West Coast Baptist on Friday at a time determined by Thursday's results. Saturday's final round will also be at a time determined by play on Friday. Whitworth last played in the Lee Fulmer Invitational during the 2002-03 season, winning the event by defeating Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges in the championship game.
