STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- David Riley's 21 points led Whitworth University to a 60-50 win over Richard Stockton College and the Pirates advanced to the championship of the Tournament of Heroes hosted by the College of Staten Island. Riley (Fr., G, Palo Alto, Calif.) made 8 of 11 shots from the field, including 5 of 7 from three point range, to lead Whitworth (6-1) to a sixth straight win. Ross Nakamura (Jr., G, Moraga, Calif.) scored 14 points and dished eight assists, while Ryan Symes (Sr., F, Palo Alto, Calif.) chipped in with 13 points while making all three of his three point attempts. The Pirates never trailed after halftime, but could never shake the Ospreys (5-2) either. After falling behind 16-14, Whitworth went on a 12-4 run to take a 26-20 lead late in the first half. The Bucs eventually led 26-22 at the break. Riley nailed a three-pointer to give Whitworth its largest lead at 37-25 with 13:22 to go. But Richard Stockton rallied to within 44-41 on a jumper by John Greene with 7:16 to go. Riley then answered with his own basket and another three pointer to extend Whitworth's lead back to 49-41. The Pirates' efficient offense worked for high percentage shots throughout the contest. Whitworth shot 60% from the floor (21 of 35) and 57.9% from three point range (11 of 19). Meanwhile the Bucs' defense held the Ospreys to 39.6% (19 of 48) from the floor and 25% (6 of 24) from three point range. The hot shooting enabled Whitworth to overcome a 24-18 rebounding deficit, the Pirates' first rebounding deficit since a season-opening loss to Chapman. Whitworth will play Bridgewater State (N.Y.) in the title game at 3:00 p.m. (EST) on Sunday. BSC defeated the host Dolphins 87-83 in the second game of the tournament. The Tournament of Heroes is six years old and honors three former College of Staten Island players who lost their lives in the events of September 11, 2001.
