Whitworth Wins Fulmer Opener
Nov. 29, 2007

REDLANDS, Calif. -- David Riley followed up his record-setting performance from last weekend with another strong scoring effort to lead Whitworth University to a 90-64 win over Southwestern College of Arizona in the opening game of the Lee Fulmer Memorial men's basketball tournament, hosted by the University of Redlands.

Riley led the way with 23 points for the Pirates

Riley (Fr., G, Palo Alto, Calif.) made 9 of 15 shots from the floor and finished with 23 points to lead the Pirates (2-1 overall). His effort follows last weekend's game at Caltech when he broke Whitworth's school record for three-pointers in a game with eight.

Drew Bruns (Fr., G, Mission Viejo, Calif.) came off of the bench to score 14 points while making 4 of 6 three pointers. Colin Willemsen (Sr., F, Moraga, Calif.) had a strong game with 11 points, 11 rebounds, six assists and three steals. Ross Nakamura (Jr., G, Moraga, Calif.) led the Bucs with seven assists.

Whitworth dominated the boards against the Eagles and finished with a 47-22 advantage, including a 17-2 edge in offensive rebounds. The Pirates also had a very efficient shooting game, making 18 of 36 attempts (50%) in each half. The edge in rebounds allowed the Bucs to take almost 20 more shots than Southwestern.

Whitworth trailed 7-4 early, but then reeled off 10 straight points, including five from Nakamura. The Pirates' halftime lead of 45-34 was their largest of the period. Willemsen had eight of his points and eight of his rebounds before halftime.

Whitworth quickly opened a 14 point lead in the second half (52-38) after a three-pointer by Bruns, but the Eagles rallied to within 52-45 with 16:13 to play. The Pirates answered with an 8-0 run and never led by less than double digits again.

Whitworth will take on either Pomona-Pitzer or West Coast Baptist on Friday night at 6:00 in the semifinals of the tournament. Those two schools play their first round game at 6:00 tonight (Thursday).
