Whitworth Runs Away With Fulmer Title
Dec. 1, 2007

REDLANDS, Calif. -- Led by MVP Ryan Symes, Whitworth University ran by host University of Redlands 93-58 to win the 60th Annual Lee Fulmer Memorial Tournament on Saturday night.

Symes was named tournament MVP

Symes (Sr., F, Palo Alto, Calif.) made 7 of 8 shots and 5 of 6 free throws to lead all scorers with 20 points. He also added eight rebounds. Colin Willemsen (Sr., F, Moraga, Calif.) posted his second double-double of the tournament with 10 points and 10 boards, to go along with eight assists. Symes was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player, while Willemsen was listed on the All-Tournament team.

Three other Pirates reached double figures in scoring, led by Nate Montgomery (So., P, Sammamish, Wash.), who scored a career-high 16 points. Ross Nakamura (Jr., G, Moraga, Calif.) scored 12 points and dished seven assists and Tim Sellereit (Jr., G, Bellingham, Wash.) came off of the bench for 10 points.

The Pirates blistered the nets with 56% shooting from the floor (33 of 59) and 50% (10 of 20) from three point range. Meanwhile, Whitworth was outrebounding Redlands 42-27, including 16 offensive rebounds to 15 defensive rebounds by the Bulldogs. The Pirate defense held Redlands to 34% (17 of 50) shooting from the field, including 13.6% (3 of 22) from three point range.

Whitworth never let the Bulldogs have a whiff of an opportunity, scoring the first 12 points of the game, including three straight three pointers by David Riley (Fr., G, Palo Alto, Calif.). The Pirates never led by less than double digits the rest of the way and had a 42-19 edge at halftime.

Whitworth, making its second-ever appearance in the Lee Fulmer Memorial Tournament, has now won the championship game both times. The Pirates won the event in December of 2002.

The Bucs are off until December 20th when they take on UC Santa Cruz in Burlingame, California. Whitworth will scrimmage against the Pirate alumni on Saturday, December 8th at 1:00 p.m.
