BURLINGAME, Calif. -- Northwest Conference members Whitworth University and University of Puget Sound completed sweeps of Gustavus Adolphus College and Simpson College on Monday afternoon at the Ameriprise Whitworth Classic, held at Burlingame High Schoool. Puget Sound 118, Simpson 88 - complete box and play by play BURLINGAME, Calif. – A 34-4 first half run quickly turned the tide in favor of 21st-ranked Puget Sound as the Loggers rolled to a 118-88 non-conference men’s basketball win over Simpson at the Ameriprise Whitworth Classic on Monday afternoon at Burlingame High School. UPS (7-2) trailed 14-9 just over three minutes into the game after David Ferezy made a pair of free throws. But then the Loggers scored the next 17 points on the way to their 34-4 run. By the time Conner Gehring scored inside, UPS had a 45-18 lead with just over nine minutes remaining in the half and the Storm were never able to recover. Austin Boyce had 12 of his 15 points in the first period to lead UPS to a 73-42 halftime lead. The Loggers shot 53% from the field in the first half, while holding the Storm (4-7) to 41% shooting and forcing 15 Simpson turnovers before the break. UPS eventually stretched the lead to as many as 45 points (101-56) midway through the second half. Tim Dunlavy scored 16 points to lead the Storm, while Dave Johnson added 14 points. Matt Fouch finished with 13 and Ben Duea came off the bench to score 12 points. Whitworth 79, Gustavus Adolphus 58 -- complete box and play by play BURLINGAME, Calif. – Whitworth put together its most efficient performance of the season to defeat Gustavus Adolphus 79-59 in a non-conference men’s basketball in the Ameriprise Classic on Monday afternoon at Burlingame High School. The 19th-ranked Pirates (8-1) shot 64% from the field, hitting over 60% in each half, to steadily pull away from the Gusties (3-5). David Riley scored 19 of his game-high 24 points in the second half to lead Whitworth. He hit five consecutive three-pointers during a stretch early in the second half that saw the Pirates increase their lead to 62-32. Ross Nakamura scored 12 points and dished six assists for Whitworth, while Nate Montgomery added 10 points and eight rebounds. Bo Gregg also scored 10 points for the Bucs. Whitworth held Gustavus to 42% from the floor during the game, including 29% from three point range. The Pirates outrebounded the Gusties 30-20.
