Complete box score and play by play BALTIMORE, Md. -- David Riley scored a career-high 34 points to lead Whitworth to a season-opening 83-67 win over Brockport St. (N.Y.) in the opening round of the Johns Hopkins Blue Jay Invitational on Friday night at Goldfarb Gym.
Riley (So., G, Palo Alto, Calif.) made six of eight three pointers, including two back to back in the second half that broke open a tight game. He also added seven rebounds. Calvin Jurich (Sr., P, Spokane, Wash.) added 12 points and a team-high eight rebounds for the Bucs, while Ross Nakamura (Sr., G, Moraga, Calif.) finished with 10 points. Riley's three pointer with 9:02 left in the first half gave Whitworth a 27-17 lead. Later in the first, Nate Montgomery (Jr., P, Sammamish, Wash.) gave the Pirates a 35-23 lead, their largest of the half. But Joel Almeida followed with a three-pointer for Brockport State, and the Golden Eagles were able to rally to within 39-35 at halftime. Whitworth struggled from the line in the first period, making only two of seven free throws. Brockport tied the game 41-41 early in the second half before the Pirates got nine straight points, include a three by Bo Gregg (Jr., F, Lewiston, Idaho) to go back in front 50-41. The Golden Eagles pulled back within 60-56 before Clay Gebbers (So., G, Brewster, Wash.) hit a pair of free throws and Riley converted a four-point play to put Whitworth up 66-56 with 8:32 left. Riley followed with another three pointer and the Pirates never led by less than 10 points the rest of the game. Whitworth moves on to play host Johns Hopkins in Saturday night's championship at 8:00 p.m. (EST). The Blue Jays ran by Moravian (Pa.) 86-61 in Friday's second game.
