Whitworth Dominates Caltech 88-38

LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- Whitworth controlled the boards and the ball in an 88-38 rout of Caltech in the opening game of the CIT/Occidental Thanksgiving Classic on Friday afternoon at Occidental's Rush Gymnasium.

Freshman post Felix Friedt posted a double-double with 18 points and 16 rebounds for the Pirates, who outrebounded the Beavers 46-14. Whitworth grabbed 21 offensive boards and did not allow Caltech a single offensive rebound. The Bucs also forced 29 turnovers by the Beavers.

The game was tied 10-10 eight minutes into the contest. But Whitworth outscored Caltech 34-7 over the final 12 minutes of the half. Tim Sellereit and Mike Odland each scored 10 points in the half for the Pirates. Whitworth opened the second half on a 7-0 run and never led by less than 30 points the rest of the game.

Five other Pirates joined Friedt in double figures. Sellereit finished with 17 points and led the team with six assists. Jordan Call and Troy Kalbhen each scored 11 points, while Steve Stockton and Odland finished with 10 apiece. Odland only played three minutes in the second half before leaving with a twisted ankle.

The Pirates (3-0) shot 52% from the field in the game, but struggled from the free throw line (10-20). Caltech (0-3) made 36% of its shots. Ryan Elmquist led the Beavers with 12 points.

The Bucs did not play their top six players during the game.

Whitworth will conclude the long season-opening road trip with a game against Chapman (Calif.) on Saturday afternoon at Caltech.
