PASADENA, Calif. -- Whitworth used its strongest defensive performance of the season to defeat Chapman 62-47 in a non-conference men's basketball game at the Caltech/Occidental Thanksgiving Classic on Friday afternoon at CIT's Braun Center.

Jurich had a
double-double

The Pirates (4-0) held the Panthers (3-1) to 27% shooting in the game (14-51) and outrebounded Chapman 37-29. Whitworth pestered the Panthers into 13% shooting (2-15) from behind the three-point line, including an 0-10 second half.

The defensive pressure started immediately as Whitworth held Chapman to five points over the first ten minutes of the game, taking a 17-5 lead on Calvin Jurich's lay up. Three minutes later the Bucs extended the lead to 20-7 on a three-point shot by David Riley for their largest lead of the first half. Whitworth went into halftime with a 31-21 advantage.

Kyle Wood nailed a jumper early in the second half to pull Chapman within 31-25 after the Panthers opened with strong defensive pressure of their own. But the Pirates withstood the pressure and a short jumper by Jurich put the Pirates back up 41-29 with 14:25 to play. Chapman remained within around ten points most of the rest of the half and were within 53-45 with 2:45 to play after a free throw by Jared Kaiser. But Whitworth made five of six free throws down the stretch and Nate Montgomery's breakaway dunk with 1:31 to play gave the Pirates a 60-46 lead.

Montgomery led Whitworth with 17 points and grabbed nine rebounds. Jurich posted a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds before fouling out late in the game. Ross Nakamura finished with 13 points.

Kaiser had 13 points and Wood scored 12 to lead Chapman.

Whitworth flies home from a season-opening road trip that took the Pirates to Baltimore and Los Angeles over the course of nine days. Whitworth will return to California next weekend to compete in the Lee Fulmer Classic, hosted by Redlands. Thursday's first round game is 2:00 p.m. against Cal State East Bay.
