Whitworth Wins at George Fox 83-67

NEWBERG, Ore. – Bo Gregg came off of the bench to score all 18 of his points in the first half, leading visiting Whitworth to an insurmountable halftime lead in an 83-67 win at George Fox in a Northwest Conference men's basketball game on Friday night at Wheeler Sports Center.

Gregg (Jr., F, Lewiston, Idaho) hit all six of his three-point tries in the first period to lead the Pirates (14-4 overall, 6-3 NWC) to a 47-31 halftime lead and lead the team in scoring. Calvin Jurich (Sr., P, Spokane, Wash.) added a double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds. Ross Nakamura (Sr., G, Moraga, Calif.) had 14 points and David Riley (So., G, Palo Alto, Calif.) added 11 points and six assists.

Alex Stockner led the Bruins (6-12, 2-7) with 16 points and six rebounds.

George Fox led 16-15 when Riley and Gregg hit back to back three-pointers to give the Pirates a 21-16 advantage and Whitworth would never trail again. Gregg hit three of his three-pointers in the final three and a half minutes of the first period, helping the Pirates extend the lead from 34-28 to 47-31 at the break.

Nakamura's jumper gave the Bucs their first 20-point lead (54-34) early in the second half before the Bruins made a brief run to cut the lead to 58-45 with just over 13 minutes to play. Whitworth recovered to take its largest lead of the game at 68-46 on a pair of free throws by Tim Sellereit (Sr., G, Bellingham, Wash.) three minutes later. The Pirates held a comfortable margin the rest of the way.

Gregg had his second strong shooting game against the Bruins. On January 2nd he scored 15 points while making 5 of 7 from three-point range.

Whitworth shot 50% from the field (29 of 58), including 11 of 23 (48%) from three-point range. The Pirates outrebounded the Bruins 36-30.

Whitworth will complete its Oregon road swing at Pacific on Saturday with a 6:00 p.m. tipoff.
