PORTLAND, Ore. – Lewis & Clark made 10 of 17 from three-point range in the second half to overcome an early deficit and defeat visiting Whitworth 74-62 in a Northwest Conference men’s basketball game on Friday night at the Pamplin Sports Center.
The Pioneers (11-5 overall, 5-2 NWC) moved a half-game ahead of the Pirates (13-4, 5-3) in the NWC standings. Whitworth made its first four three-point tries, including a pair by David Riley (So., G, Palo Alto, Calif.) to take a 19-4 lead five minutes into the game. But the Pirates went 0-8 the rest of the half as L&C climbed back into the game. Whitworth led 30-24 at halftime. The Pioneers continued their run early in the second half, using a 10-3 run to take a 34-33 lead, their first of the game. After an exchange of leads, five straight points by James Hollins gave L&C a 44-39 lead with 15 minutes to play. Calvin Jurich (Sr., P, Spokane, Wash.) scored inside as Whitworth tied the game 50-50 with just under 10 minutes to play. Whitworth trailed 53-52 with 5:21 to play when Ross Nakamura (Sr., G, Moraga, Calif.) went to the free throw line with a chance to give the Pirates the lead. But after Nakamura missed the front end of a one-and-one, the Pioneers outscored the Pirates 12-4, including three straight three-pointers, to go ahead 65-56 and essentially clinch the game. Jurich led Whitworth with 20 points and 15 rebounds, his third double-double of the season. Riley added 15 points and Tim Sellereit (Sr., G, Bellingham, Wash.) had a career-high 10 rebounds to go with six points. The Pirates' cold shooting continued into the second half as Whitworth made only 2 of 10 three-point attempts. Lewis & Clark suffered through a 3 for 21 three-point first half, but controlled the second half by making 10 of 17 (59%) from beyond the arc. Hollins and Josh Kollasch each scored 20 points to lead the Pioneers. Kollasch added a team-high eight rebounds. Whitworth will begin the second half of its Northwest Conference schedule next weekend at George Fox (Friday at 8:00 p.m.) and at Pacific (Saturday at 6:00 p.m.).
