Nakamura and Riley Lead Whitworth Past Whitman

SPOKANE, Wash. – Ross Nakamura and David Riley combined for nearly half of Whitworth's points in a 101-70 win over visiting Whitman in a Northwest Conference men's basketball game on Tuesday night at the Whitworth Fieldhouse.

The Pirates (13-3 overall, 5-2 NWC) punished the Missionaries' high-pressure defense by shooting 57% (34-60) from the field, including 52% (11-21) from three-point range. Whitman (6-10, 2-5) made only 28% (16-57) of its shots from the field.

Nakamura (Sr., G, Moraga, Calif.) scored 25 points to go along with four assists. Riley (So., G, Palo Alto, Calif.) finished with 23 points and made three of his four attempts from three-point range. Four other Pirates reached double figures in scoring: Nate Montgomery (Jr., P, Sammamish, Wash.) had 13 to go along with six rebounds, Clay Gebbers (So., G, Brewster, Wash.) had 11 with four assists and two steals, Calvin Jurich (Sr., P, Spokane, Wash.) had 10 with a team-high nine rebounds and Tim Sellereit (Sr., G, Bellingham, Wash.) came off of the bench for 10 points.

Brandon Shaw had 15 points to lead Whitman. Senior Chris Faidley, the NWC's leading scorer coming into the game, finished with 14 points on 3 of 13 shooting. Steve Campbell scored 13 and David Michaels came off of the bench for 10 points and a team-high six rebounds.

The Pirates never trailed in the game, opening a quick 18-5 lead that included five three-pointers - two by Nakamura - over the first six minutes of the game. The first half lead reached 32-12 on a lay-up by Jurich and Steve Stockton's (Sr., G, Spokane, Wash.) jumper just before the buzzer gave Whitworth a 43-27 lead. Riley had 12 of his points in the first half to lead the Bucs.

Whitworth never trailed by less than 15 points in the second half and steadily stretched a 21-point lead to as many as 33 points in the final seven minutes of the game.

Both teams will hit the road to play at Lewis & Clark College this weekend. The Pirates and Pioneers will play a game for sole possession of second place in the NWC standings on Friday night at 8:00 p.m. Whitman follows with a game at L&C on Saturday at 6:00 p.m.
