Strong Second Half Helps UPS Overcome Whitworth

SPOKANE, Wash. -- Visiting University of Puget Sound outscored Whitworth College 47-28 in the second half to overcome a five point halftime deficit and defeat the Pirates 83-69 in a Northwest Conference women's basketball game on Friday night in the Whitworth Fieldhouse.

Kilty Keaton scored 14 of her 19 points in the second period to spark the Loggers' rally. The win kept 20th-ranked UPS (19-3, 11-2 NWC) in at least a tie for first place in the NWC standings. The loss was Whitworth's (13-8, 7-6 NWC) first at home this season.

Laura Hirsh gave UPS an early 13-7 lead with a three-pointer, and the Loggers were still up 24-19 after another three pointer by Hirsh. She finished with three in the first half for UPS. But then Whitworth went on a 13-2 run, taking a 32-26 lead after a pair of free throws by Tiffany Corigliano. Emily Hendrickson's three pointer at the end of the half sent the Pirates to the locker room with a 41-36 lead.

Holly Ridings' jumper early in the second half gave Whitworth its biggest lead of the game at 45-38. But then UPS began to take control. Sarah Carnahan's lay up gave the visitors a 46-45 lead. There would be three more ties, but Whitworth would never lead again. Tied 49-49, the Loggers went on a 10-2 run, including five straight points by Brie Adderley A Keaton three pointer gave UPS a 70-55 advantage with 6:31 to play and the Pirates did not threaten again.

Carnahan added 18 points and five assists to the UPS effort. Hirsh finished with 15 points and added a game-high eight rebounds. The Loggers shot 53% (31/58) from the field and 58% (11/19) from three point range.

Hendrickson scored a game-high 24 points to lead the Pirates. She also had seven rebounds. Amy Ridings added 13 points and Holly Ridings had 12. The Pirates shot 44% (24/54) from the field, but only 39% (7/17) in the second half.

Both teams return to action on Friday night. UPS will travel to Walla Walla to take on Whitman College. Whitworth will host Pacific Lutheran University, which came into the night tied for first place with UPS.
