UPS Comeback Tops Whitworth Women

SPOKANE, Wash. - The University of Puget Sound camback from a twelve point second-half deficit to beat the Whitworth Pirates 73-68 in women's basketball action Friday night at the Whitworth Fieldhouse. With the win the Loggers improve to 11-3 and remain on top of the Northwest Conference at 4-1.

The Pirates (9-5, 3-2) led 53-41 with a little over thirteen minutes to play in the second half. But the Loggers wouldn't go away and as Jessica Roberts hit two long range three-point shots sparking a 15-4 run that cut the Pirate lead to 57-56 with 8:30 to play.

The teams traded baskets in see-saw fashion until the two minute mark when the Loggers Morgon Harter took over. A driving lay-up gave the Loggers their first lead of the second half at 67-66. Harter followed that up with another tough jumper in the lane and two free-throws that extended the Puget Sound lead to 71-66 with only 26 seconds to play. After the Pirates missed a three-pointer Allison Craven to two free throws to seal the win for the Loggers.

The first half saw both teams light it up from behind the arc, combining for 13 three-pointers. Alida Bower paced the Pirates with 12 first half points, hitting 4 of 7 from three. Marissa Cain hit a trio of long-range shots for 9 first-half point. Susan McDaniel chipped in 8 points for the Pirates as Whitworth took a 40-33 lead into the half-time break.

Craven and Cain led the Logger attack scoring 14 points each. Roberts added 11 for the Loggers on 3 of 5 shooting from behind the arc. McDaniel poured in a game highs 18 points and 9 rebounds for the Pirates. Bower finished with 14 points and 6 rebounds while Cassie Snyder had 8 assists.

Both teams are back in NWC action tomorrow night. Whitworth hosts Pacific Lutheran while the Loggers travel to Whitman to take on the Missionaries. Both games tip off at 4:00 pm.
