Bower Powers Pirates Past Willamette
Feb. 16, 2007

SPOKANE, Wash. - Alida Bower led a trio of Whitworth players who reached double figures in scoring as the host Pirates ended the 2006-2007 season with a 74-57 win over visiting Willamette in a Northwest Conference women's basketball game on Friday night in the Whitworth Fieldhouse.

Bower posted a total of 25 points, 11 rebounds

Bower's double-double of 25 points and 11 rebounds led the Pirates, who end the season with an overall record of 14-11 and an NWC mark of 8-8. Susan McDaniel added her own double with 12 points and 10 boards, while Natalie Orrell chipped in with 11 points.

Sara Brooks scored 17 points while making 4 of 4 three point attempts to lead the Bearcats (4-20, 2-13). Keilyn Fujioka came off of the bench to score 15 points and grab five rebounds for Willamette.

The teams traded first half leads until Whitworth pulled away from a 28-25 lead at the end of the first half with a quick 8-2 run for a 36-27 halftime advantage. McDaniel scored four of the points.

Two free throws by McDaniel gave Whitworth a 40-27 lead early in the second half, but the Bearcats fought back to within 50-42 on a free throw by Brooks with just over nine minutes to play. However Willamette could get no closer and the Pirates spent the rest of the game with a double digit lead. Whitworth took its biggest lead of the game when Bower made two free throws for a 70-50 advantage with 2:06 left in the game.

Whitworth finishes with its sixth straight winning season and eighth in the last nine years. The future looks bright for the Pirates as there were no seniors to recognize on what is traditionally a senior night event.

Willamette will finish its season tomorrow night with a game at Whitman.
