Whitman 56 Lola Browne and Alisha Flaaten each hit three point shots for Dominican during an 11-0 run that turned a 53-47 deficit into a 58-53 lead with just under a minute to play. Whitman's Katie Patneaude made three of four free throws, rebounding her own miss to pick up the second two free shots, to pull the Missionaires within 58-56. But Michelle Cassilagio clinched the game for the Penguins by making two free throws with 12 seconds left. Whitman jumped to an early 11-3 lead and never trailed in the first half. The Missionaries biggest lead in the half was 21-11. They took a 30-25 edge into the locker room. Whitman controlled most of the second half as well, taking a 45-34 lead with 12:54 to play after a three pointer by Michelle Krall. But the Missionaries could never shake Dominican completely. Browne finsihed with 11 points and six rebounds to lead the Penguins. Flaaten added nine points and four assists. Kelsey Krumdieck scored a game-high 14 points and grabbed five boards for Whitman. Patneaude scored 10 points and added five rebounds. Dominican (7-6) will face host Whitworth College in Sunday's second game at 3:00 pm. 52 The Pirates needed the extra shots, especially in the first half when they missed 17 of their first 20 attempts from the floor on the way to 31.3% shooting in the period. Whitworth improved the shooting percentage to 44.4% (12/27) in the second half. The Pirates outrebounded the Athenas 37-27, including a 16-5 edge in offensive rebounds. Whitworth's defense also forced C-M-S into 20 turnovers. The Athenas led by as many as seven points early in the first half after Lana Young's layup gave them a 14-7 lead. But the Pirates scored 10 of the next 11 points to take their first lead at 17-15. Whitworth eventually led 28-24 at halftime. After two straight C-M-S baskets tied the game early in the second half, the Pirates went on a 12-0 run to take control of the game. The Athenas pulled as close as 52-46 with five and a half minutes to play, but Whitworth quickly extended the lead back to ten points and was never threatened the rest of the way. Whitworth freshman Natalie Orrell led Whitworth with 16 points, while Alida Bower scored 12 points. Molly Schlander and Tiffany Corigliano each scored 11 points off of the bench for the Bucs, and Susan McDaniel grabbed a game-high nine rebounds. Jocelyn Woolsey scored a game-high 17 points for the Athenas, while Mica Nereu added 10 points and six rebounds. The Pirates (6-2) will host Dominican (Calif.) on Sunday at 3:00 pm in the Quality Inn - Whit Classic finale. Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (3-4) will take on co-host Whitman at 1:00 pm.
