Whitworth Beats Concordia for First Win of 2007-08

CHICAGO - Whitworth University came back from double-digit deficits in both halves to defeat Concordia College (Minn.) 76-68 in the consolation game of the University of Chicago Midway Classic on Sunday afternoon.

The Pirates (1-1) trailed by 12 points in the first half and 44-34 just over one minute into the second half before rallying to outscore the Cobbers 42-28 in the second half. Whitworth turned the game around after halftime, shooting 51.7% and forcing 11 second half turnovers while giving up only five.

Natalie Orrell (So., F, Wenatchee, Wash.) scored 17 points and grabbed seven rebounds to lead the Pirates. Leah Pomante (So., G, Spokane, Wash.) came off of the bench for 12 points and four assists. Courtney Gaddis (Fr., F, Honolulu, Hawaii) scored 22 points over the course of the two games to earn All-Tournament team honors.

Whitworth is now 2-0 all-time against Concordia (0-2). The Pirates defeated the Cobbers 63-60 at home in 2004.

Whitworth returns home to host Lewis-Clark State College on Tuesday night. That game will tip off at 7:00 p.m. in the Whitworth Fieldhouse.
