Whitworth Rolls Past UC Santa Cruz
Dec. 8, 2007

TACOMA, Wash. - Tiffany Corigliano scored 18 points to lead Whitworth University to a 70-43 non-conference women's basketball win over UC Santa Cruz on the second day of competition at the Nick-N-Willy's Winter Classic hosted by the University of Puget Sound.

Corigliano led the
Pirates in scoring

Corigliano (Jr., F, Nine Mile Falls, Wash.) was 7 of 7 from the field, including a 4 of 4 night from three-point range, to lead the Pirates (4-2) to their third straight victory. It is the third time this season that Corigliano has led the Bucs in scoring.

Natalie Orrell (So., F, Wenatchee, Wash.) had 10 points, four assists and two blocks. Liz Horiatis (Fr., P, Woodinville, Wash.) added 10 points and five boards. Both Orrell and Horiatis were named to the all-tournament team.

Whitworth never trailed in the game. The Pirates jumped to a 9-0 lead, including two buckets by Horiatis, on the way to a 39-23 halftime advantage. After the Banana Slugs (4-6) pulled within 20-13, Corigliano hit a three-pointer to spark a 7-0 spurt that gave Whitworth control of the rest of the half.

The Pirates quickly extended the lead to 50-28 early in the second half after another three-pointer by Corigliano and eventually led by as many as 31 points (63-32) after Alida Bower's (Jr., F, Onalaska, Wash.) jump shot.

Whitworth outrebounded UCSC 40-33 and forced 26 Banana Slug turnovers. The Pirates were also effective at getting to the free throw line, where they made 16 of 18 attempts (89%).

Whitworth will return home to host Eastern Oregon University next Friday night at 6:00 p.m. in the Whitworth Fieldhouse.
