UPS Survives Scare from Whitworth

TACOMA, Wash. - (From UPS Sports Information Office) Junior post Karen Chase recorded a double-double to help 25th-ranked Puget Sound hold off Whitworth 65-56 in a Northwest Conference women's basketball game on Saturday afternoon at Memorial Fieldhouse in Tacoma, Wash.

The Loggers (12-3, 5-1 NWC) took a brief lead early in the first half but the Pirates (8-7, 3-3 NWC) took over the lead and quickly pushed the advantage to 25-15 on a three-pointer by Molly Schlander. The Loggers fought back to pull within three at half, 31-28.

The Loggers and Pirates then traded leads throughout the second half. The Pirates took their final lead on a jumper in the key by Liz Horiatis with 2:47 to play. But the Loggers finished the game on a 10-0 run to pull away from the Pirates.

The Bucs were led by 14 points from Tiffany Corigliano and 11 points from Natalie Orrell. Alida Bower had eight points and a team-high eight rebounds.

The Loggers were led by 19 points and 13 rebounds from Chase. Marissa Cain added 18 points while Laura Hirsh chalked up 15 points. The Loggers out rebounded the Bucs 37 to 28.

Whitworth will get little time to rest, heading to Walla Walla to take on Whitman on Tuesday night at 6:00 p.m.
