Three Pirates Headed to NCAA Championships

SALEM, Ore. -- Whitworth College qualified two women and one man for next week's NCAA Division III Cross Country championship meet with three top six finishes at today's NCAA Division III West Regionals in Salem, Oregon.

Kristi Dickey (Sr., Kennewick, Wash. - Southridge) finished fourth overall in the women's race, covering the six kilometers in 22:28.75. Sarah Zerzan of Willamette won the race with a time of 21:58.00. Julie Lauterbach (Jr., Arnold, Calif. - Bret Harte) punched her ticket to nationals by finishing sixth in 22:39.85. The pair led the Pirates to a fifth place team finish. Willamette and Colorado College earned the two team berths to the national championships.

Doug Blackburn (Sr., Evansville, Ind. - Evansville North) earned his third trip to the NCAA Championships by finishing fourth in the regional meet. His eight kilometer time was 25:34.55. Crosby Freeman of Pomona-Pitzer won the race with a time of 24:41.35. Jeff Grassley (Jr., Flower Mound, Texas - Flower Mound) and Jacob Deitz (So., Mead, Wash. - Mt. Spokane) earned All-Region honors by finishing in 28th (26:35.00) and 29th (26:37.85) respectively. Willamette and Pomona-Pitzer qualified as teams for the national championships.

The NCAA Championships will take place next Saturday morning at Ohio Wesleyan University.
