Whitworth Teams Take Third Places at NWC Championships

SALEM, Ore. -- Whitworth College's men and women both finished in third place in the final team standings at the Northwest Conference Cross Country Championships on Saturday afternoon at Bush Pasture Park in Salem, Oregon.

Whitworth's Doug Blackburn finished third in the men's race, while Kristi Dickey and Julie Lauterbach finished fourth and fifth in the women's race to earn All-Northwest Conference honors.

Willamette University, the meet's host, won both team competitions.

Blackburn led the Pirate men to their fourth straight third place finish in the meet. He ran the eight kilometer course in 25:26.0, eight seconds behind Nick Symmonds of Willamette who won the race with a time of 25:18.1. Jeff Grassley earned honorable mention All-NWC honors by finishing 14th in 26:15.6. Travis Huskisson was 27th in 27:00.9. Phil Grahlfs (27:05.1) and Jacob Deitz (27:07.0) rounded out the Pirate scoring in 31st (tie) and 33rd places, respectively.

The final men's team scores were: Willamette 26, Puget Sound 46, Whitworth 100, Linfield 122, Lewis & Clark 138, George Fox 166, Whitman 171, Pacific Lutheran 183, Pacific INC. Click here for complete men's results.

Dickey ran the six kilometer women's course in 22:25.70, followed by Lauterbach in 22:39.6. Carla McHattie of Lewis & Clark won the race with a time of 22:05.4. Elaine Heinemann took 25th in 23:43.2, while Andrea Carnahan was 27th in 23:51.2. Heather Thomsen was Whitworth's final scorer in 33rd place with a time of 24:05.1.

The final women's team scores were: Willamette 51, Lewis & Clark 75, Whitworth 94, Linfield 98, George Fox 110, Puget Sound 138, Whitman 189, Pacific 190, Pacific Lutheran 196. Click here for complete women's results.

Whitworth will return to action on November 12th when the Pirates compete at the NCAA West Region championship meet. The meet will take place at the same Bush Pasture Park course as the NWC Championships. All NCAA Championship berths, both team and individual, will be up for grabs at the regional race.
