TACOMA, Wash. -- The Whitworth men won and the Pirate women took second place on Saturday afternoon at the Pacific Lutheran Invitational today at the PLU Golf Course. Doug Blackburn finished second overall in the men's race, but first among team scorers, to lead the Pirate men. He ran the 8 kilometer course in 26:18.9, behind only Destrey Johnson of Team XO (25:49.0). Jeff Grassley finished ninth overall in 26:41.8, while Jacob Deitz took 13th (27:29.3), followed closely by Brooks Cooper in 14th place (27:34.2). Phil Grahlfs was 17th in 27:44.0. The Pirates finished with 42 points to outdistance Lewis & Clark (63), PLU (74), George Fox (78) and UPS (84). The Pirate women were second with 50 points, trailing only Lewis & Clark's score of 43. George Fox was third (52), followed by PLU (78) and UPS (147). Kristi Dickey finished second individually with a 6 kilometer time of 22:18.8. Carla McHattie of L&C won the race in 22:03.5. Whitworth's Elaine Heinemann was seventh in 23:28.9. Heather Thomsen (24:03.0) and Andrea Carnahan (24:03.5) finished 13th and 14th, respectively. Kaitlin Fuller rounded out Whitworth's scoring by finishing 18th in 24:15.9. Whitworth will compete again next week at the Bigfoot Invitational hosted by the Community Colleges of Spokane. The meet will take place at Spokane Falls Community College, with the women's meet getting started at 10:00 am, followed by the men at 10:45 am.
